The Wilmette Park District offers Summer Short-term staff the following benefits: Individual Seasonal Beach and Pool Pass, One (1) parking decal for Gillson Beach (over 16 years of age only), Individual Center Fitness Club Membership for June – August for the year of employment.
Sailing Instructor Job Summary
The Sailing Instructor is responsible for educating students with basic to intermediate knowledge of sailing operations. The season begins in May and ends in October.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Teach on land and in water to both children and adults
- Attend to participants in both private and group settings
- Monitor and complete reports on water conditions, safety, and equipment checks, and incident reports
- Enforce all area rules and regulations with consistency
- Assist with park and facility cleanliness
- Comply with established Park District and site procedures
- Perform other related duties as assigned, based on agency needs
- Actively contribute to the Park Districts’ sustainability goals
Safety Responsibilities:
- Actively support the safety program that will effectively control and reduce accidents
- Obey all Park District and departmental safety rules, regulations, and procedures established by the Wilmette Park District safety program that are pertinent to the activities conducted at the facility and property
- Promptly report all unsafe actions, practices, or conditions to the immediate supervisor
- Attend and participate in required safety training
- Review all accident and incident reports that occur under the area of responsibility and send them to the Human Resources/Risk Management division
- Responsible for administering minor first aid if needed
Required Skills/Abilities (Technology, Mathematical, Language):
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
- Ability to deliver information in a clear and effective manner

Education and/or Experience:
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- One (1) year sailing experience required
- Must possess technical and working knowledge of catamarans and sunfish
Physical Requirements/Work Environment:
- Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Holiday and weekend work is required
- Frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, push, pull, carry, and repeatedly stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
- Occasionally required to sit, climb or balance
- Specific vision abilities, including close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
Required Certificates/Licenses/Registrations:
- American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED certification
- Preference will be given to applicants with current U.S. Sailing Instructor Certification, Safety Rescue and Support Certification, and/or Safe Power Boating Certification
