Description

The Wilmette Park District offers Summer Short-term staff the following benefits: Individual Seasonal Beach and Pool Pass, One (1) parking decal for Gillson Beach (over 16 years of age only), Individual Center Fitness Club Membership for June – August the current year of employment. 

Summer Camp Counselor Job Summary:

The Camp Counselor role is responsible for overseeing an assigned group of children each day to create projects, lead games, and supervise campers in scheduled weekly activities. Weekly activities may include but are not limited to sports and games, free swim, beach visits, other outside activities and chaperoning field trips. Based on the needs, supervisory staff will assign camp placement based on counselor preference, availability and the needs of the Park District. Additional questions within the application process will be used to assist with the camp placement process.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Maintain good communication with parents, children and Park District staff
  • Prepare incident reports when needed
  • Responsible for the care and upkeep of all camp equipment
  • Supervise campers at camp site, create and implement weekly lesson plans, attend field trips or outings and prepare materials for distribution
  • Attend all camp orientation sessions and work the full nine weeks of the camp session
  • Responsible for the safe arrival and dismissal of campers
  • Adhere to a complete curriculum, set by the camp director
  • Follow-through with all other duties as assigned by Camp Supervisor
  • Maintain close supervision of children when assisting in programs
  • Actively contribute to the Park District's sustainability goals

Safety Responsibilities:

  • Actively support the safety program that will effectively control and reduce accidents
  • Obey all Park District and departmental safety rules, regulations and procedures established by the Wilmette Park District safety program that are pertinent to the activities conducted at the facility and property
  • Promptly report all unsafe actions, practices or conditions to the immediate supervisor
  • Attend and participate in required safety training
  • Review all accident and incident reports that occur under area of responsibility and send to Human Resources/Risk Management division
  • Responsible for administering minor first aid if needed
  • Monitor the learn/play environment for safety hazards
  • Maintain safety of campers at all times, including pool, bus and field trips

Required Skills/Abilities (Technology, Mathematical, Language):

  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions
  • Excellent verbal skills and the ability to communicate professionally with parents/guardians and other Park District staff
  • Possess sound judgment, tact and diplomacy in dealing with a variety of personality types
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Skilled in problem solving, creating contingency plans, and handling emergencies
  • Organizational skills, attention to detail, initiative and independence

Education and/or Experience:

  • At least 16 years of age or older
  • A minimum of one year of related experience

Physical Requirements/Work Environment:

  • Ability to work in all climate weather
  • Must be comfortable getting into a large body of water if applicable
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at any given time
  • Tolerate a moderate to high noise level at times
  • Frequently required to stand, walk and sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and push/pull and carry objects

Campers wrap up their camp day at After Camp Rec with games, crafts, and more! 

Camper age: Grades K-8 

Afternoon Adventures Counselor 

Full Day: M-F 8:45 am-3:45 pm June 30, July 1, July 3, August 1-8 

Half Day: 10:45 am-3:45 pm July 2, July 7- 31 

Camp is a combination of half-day and full-day sessions over the course of six weeks. Half-day camps run in the afternoons only for four weeks after District #39 Summer Enrichment. Enjoy days filled with fun activities, field trips, sports, free swim, and arts and crafts. 

Camper age: Grades 1-6

Aquatics Camp Counselor 

M-F 9 am-2:15 pm 

Campers enjoy Lake Michigan offerings such as paddle boarding, banana boating, kayaking, and much more. 

Camper age: Grades 5-8

Arts in the Park Counselor 

M-F 8:45 am-2:45 pm 

Young artists have the opportunity to explore different kinds of art, attend weekly field trips, and visit Centennial Pool and Gillson Beach. 

Camper age: Grades 1-6 

Broadway Bound Counselor 

M-F 8:45 am-3:15 pm 

Each session of this performing arts camp is jam-packed with acting, singing, dancing, lighting, audio, and stage crew activities that culminate in a full-length junior production. Campers visit Gillson Beach weekly and attend one field trip each session.

Camp Innovation Counselor 

M-F 9 am-2:45 pm 

Campers explore science and math while participating in traditional camp activities, such as outdoor play, field trips, and trips to Gillson Beach. 

Camper age: 4-7 years old 

Dance Camp Counselor 

M-F 8:45 am-3:15 pm 

Dancers participate in daily technique classes and explore major dance styles: Ballet, Jazz, Hip-hop, Musical Theatre, and surprise genres. Campers also have free swim twice each week and go on field trips. 

Camper age: Grades 3-8

Great Gillson Camp Counselor 

M-F 9 am-3 pm 

Counselors will help facilitate the campers' having great fun on all 59 acres of Gillson Park as they participate in various activities along our Lakefront, including swimming, field trips, and much more. 

Camper age: Grades 3-8 

Hummingbirds Camp Counselor 

M-F 8 am-6 pm  

(6-hour shift within this time) 

Our youngest campers enjoy their first camp experience with indoor and outdoor play and weekly themes. Counselors will be required to assist in diapering. 

Camper age: 2 years old 

Junior Day Camp Counselor 

M-F 8:45 am-3:15 pm 

Campers have fun-filled days with crafts, games, activities, free swim, swim lessons, trips to Gillson Beach and a weekly field trip. 

Camper age: Grades 1-4 

**MUST BE 16 YEARS OR OLDER TO APPLY 

Little World Travelers Counselor 

MWF 9 am-12 pm 

Campers "travel" to a new country each week and do crafts and activities related to that country. *Pairs with Preschool Dance Camp* 

Camper age: 3-5 years old 

 

Preschool Dance Camp Counselor 

T/Th 9 am-12 pm 

Preschool Dance Camp is focused on movement and music. *Pairs with Little World Travelers* 

Camper age: 3-5 years old 

Sports Camp Counselor 

M-F 8:45 am-2:45 pm 

Campers participate in various indoor and outdoor sports, emphasizing teamwork and sportsmanship. Sports Camp visits Gillson Beach and Centennial Pool weekly and attends a weekly field trip. 

Camper age: Grades 1-6

Summer Doves Camp Counselor 

M-F 8 am-6 pm (6-hour shift within this time) 

Preschool-age campers enjoy their first camp experience, which includes indoor and outdoor play and weekly themes. 

Camper age: 3-4 years old 

Teen Camp Counselor 

M-F 8:45 am-4:15 pm 

Teens attend three weekly field trips, a weekly trip to Gillson Beach, and free swim at Centennial Pool. 

Camper age: Grades 6-9 

**MUST BE 18 YEARS OR OLDER TO APPLY 

Teen L.E.A.P Counselor 

M-F 8:45 am-2:45 pm 

Lead and Explore through Adventure and Purpose. Campers will develop their leadership skills through hands-on activities such as team challenges, a ropes course, outdoor adventures, interactive and creative workshops, and Service Projects within our community. Teen L.E.A.P. camp includes trips to the pool, Gillson Beach, and one special guest or off-site trip.  

Camper age: Grades 6-8

Teeny Tiny Tots Camp Counselor 

M-F 8:45 am-12 pm 

Our youngest campers enjoy their first camp experience with indoor and outdoor play and weekly themes. Counselors will be required to assist in diapering.

Tiny Tots Camp Counselor 

M-F 8:45 am-12 pm 

Preschool-age campers enjoy their first camp experience, which includes indoor and outdoor play and weekly themes. 

Camper age: 3-4 years old 

Wiggleworms Camp Counselor 

M-F 8:45 am-3:15 pm 

Campers have fun-filled days with crafts, games, activities, free swim, swim lessons, trips to Gillson Beach and a weekly field trip. 

Camper age: Grades K-2
