Description
Job Summary: The Youth Basketball Referee is responsible for officiating youth basketball games for ages 5-14. Thorough knowledge of basketball and applicable Park District rules to officiate each age group is required to ensure games run smoothly and players engage in good sportsmanship at all times. Referees are paid on a per game basis.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Actively support the agencys risk management protocol that will effectively control and reduce accidents
- Obey the practical safety rules, regulations and procedures established by the Safety Committee, attend and participate in required safety trainings
- Promptly report all unsafe actions, practices or conditions to the immediate supervisor
- Perform other related duties as assigned, based on agency needs
- Create a safe, engaging environment throughout the framework of soccer games
- Thorough knowledge of grade specific Park District basketball rules for Grades 1-8 (age 5-14)
- Positively interact with youth, coaches, parents/guardians and team members
- Referee games within specific grade level basketball rules
- Provide positive feedback to participants and coaches during and after games
- Communicate with other Park District staff, supervisors and team leaders as needed
Required Skills/Abilities (Technology, Mathematical, Language):

- Ability to articulate age specific soccer rules to participants, coaches and parents/guardians
- Ability to project across a large area with clear and concise language
- Ability to maintain self-control and composure in high stress and/or difficult situations
Education and/or Experience:
- Must be at least 16 years old
- At least three (3) years of experience playing basketball
- Experience officiating basketball preferred
Physical Requirements/Work Environment:
- Must be able to work weekends
- Must be able to run back and forth on the length of basketball court
Required Certificates/Licenses/Registrations:
- IHSA certification preferred
