Description
Summary Provides prescribed medical treatment and personal care services to ill, injured, convalescent, and disabled persons in such settings as hospitals, clinics, physician offices, private homes, schools, sanitariums, and similar institutions by performing the following duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Under the direction of the registered nurse, provides nursing care in accordance with departmental and hospital policies and procedures.
- Interviews patient to determine medical problem/condition and documents in chart for physician.
- Obtains and records patient's vital signs and weight.
- Assists physician with patient examination as needed.
- Reviews physician's orders, lab requests, or follow-up needs with patient.
- Documents services performed for billing purposes.
- Dresses wounds and gives enemas, douches, alcohol rubs, and massages.
- Applies compresses, ice bags, and hot water bottles.
- Observes patients and reports adverse reactions to medication or treatment to medical personnel in charge.
- Administers specified medication, orally or by subcutaneous or intermuscular injection, and notes time and amount on patients' charts.
- Assembles and uses such equipment as catheters, tracheotomy tubes, and oxygen suppliers.
- Collects samples, such as urine, blood, and sputum, from patients for testing and performs routine laboratory tests on samples.
- Cleans equipment and supplies.
- Prepares or examines food trays for prescribed diet and feeds patients.
- Records food and fluid intake and output.
- Bathes, dresses, and assists patients in walking and turning.
- Cleans rooms, makes beds, and answers patients' calls.
- Washes and dresses bodies of deceased persons.
- Maintains supplies, including stocking and ordering new supplies and disposing of expired or damaged supplies.
- Responds to patient telephone inquiries by evaluating and responding to the patient's problems and questions.
- Follows up with patients on lab results, including the scheduling of any additional tests.
Education and/or Experience
Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing preferred.
CPR certification preferred
Other Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated proficiency in acute care nursing, knowledge and skills.
