Description
Summary Draws blood from patients or donors in hospital, blood bank, clinics or similar facility for analysis or other medical purposes by performing the following duties. Performs waived point of care testing under the CLIA and COLA guidelines, under coordination of the Laboratory Point of Care Specialist. Provides Courier Services as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Performs phlebotomy functions and non-technical duties in areas including the hospital laboratory, outpatient and off-site services to include assembling all equipment required.
- Verifies or records identity of patient or donor by utilizing COLA and CLIA guidelines and converses with patient or donor to allay fear of procedure.
- Applies tourniquet to arm, locates accessible vein, swabs puncture area with antiseptic, and inserts needle into vein to draw blood into collection tube or bag.
- Withdraws needle, applies treatment to puncture site, and labels and stores blood container according to COLA, CLIA and lab requirements for subsequent processing.
- Pricks finger or heel to draw blood form children, infants or hard to draw patients as required.
- Registers patients in CMMC Information System when performing duties in the outlying CMMC clinics.
- Verifies patient insurance in clinic and CMMC Information Systems, prior to specimen collection.
- Performs temperature checks and quality control for waived testing.
- Perform general maintenance as needed for performance of waived testing.
- Assists in inventory and supplies as needed in CMMC outpatient area and outlying clinic waived testing
- Provides courier services as required for lab and outlying clinics, which includes ensuring your own transportation for pick-up and deliveries as required.
- Must have a clean driving record.
- Must have a working phone or pager to ensure that youre available for Consultation when needed.
- Ensures all COLA, CLIA, CMS, and Joint Commission standards are met.
- Will adhere to guidelines set forth in the CMMC Standards of Excellence.
- Schedule will vary according to need of laboratory and outlying clinics to include anything Monday-Sunday between the hours of 5am to 10pm. Duties will be at any of the facilities mentioned. Holiday schedule requires 2 per year per phlebotomist.
- A valid Texas Drivers License is required, as the job duties include traveling to all CMMC campuses, as appropriate.
Education and/or Experience
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience deemed acceptable under CMS, COLA, CLIA, JCAHO and Laboratory Manager guidelines.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Certified or certified eligible with National Phlebotomy Association preferred or Medical Assistant Certification with blood collection experience outside the normal school requirement.
