Description of Work
The CPS In-Home Team is a unit within Child Protective Services (CPS) comprised of social workers working intensely with families to keep children in their homes safely. The main goal for the CPS in-home position is to provide safety minded, trauma-informed interventions to a small caseload of children up to age 18 and their adult caretakers (often parents), that have substantiated, or services needed CPS cases. There are 5 core functions of the CPS In-Home Social Work position : assessment of safety, mental health / substance misuse needs, service planning and linkage, family stabilization and monitoring and advocacy. The CPS In-Home Social Worker is responsible for applying a social work / trauma lens to the safety assessment, in-home service plan development and the management of a that plan for each family on their caseload. They will use their social work knowledge when completing the Family Services Agreement to best assess the family situation and identify any impact that trauma, violence, mental health and substance abuse has had on family functioning and safety. Based on their assessment, the CPS in-home social worker will be expected to make specific recommendations on family needs. The CPS in-home social worker will be expected to make strategic mental health referrals pairing any identified mental health issues with specific evidenced based, trauma-informed services in the community. A high level of intensive involvement is expected to be provided to families in the CPS In-Home Program, to help stabilize and keep the family together. The CPS in-home social worker will provide direct services to the family to help reduce the risk of child maltreatment and support and reinforce the therapeutic goals and interventions of any mental health services they are receiving. The CPS in-home social worker will facilitate behavioral case planning, mental health, and substance abuse education when appropriate, general parenting training and skill development, and the development of positive social supports. They will work individually with the families on their caseload and interactively with their personal support systems to build a sustainable safety network for the child. They will also work closely with other Child Welfare social workers, and Child and Family Team facilitators. The CPS in-home social worker will partner with local mental health providers to ensure appropriate trauma-specific treatments and trauma-informed services are available for children and parents.
Effective written and verbal communication skills are essential. The ability to establish professional boundaries and work in a team setting and with other community professionals is necessary. Requires an understanding of mental illness, trauma, and substance use disorders and ability to educate on those conditions and develop support plans. Knowledge on family systems and the ability to coach families on healthy family hierarchies, general behavior management principles and developing positive support systems is crucial. Applicants must have a valid driver's license and dependable transportation. Must be able to demonstrate intermediate level of personal computer skills. Must be able to practice in a brief-solution, Safety Organized Practice (SOP), trauma informed style with families.
Minimum Education and Experience
Master's degree from an accredited school of social work and one year of social work experience; or a Bachelor's degree from an accredited school of social work and two years of social work or counseling experience; or Master's degree in a counseling field and two years of social work or counseling experience; or a four-year degree in a human services field or related curriculum and three years of social work or counseling experience; or graduation from a four-year college or university and four years of experience in rehabilitation counseling, pastoral counseling or a related human service field providing experience in the techniques of casework, group work or community organization; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
One year of work experience can be credited for completion of the social work collaborative.
