Winchester Thurston School, a Junior Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12 independent day school in Pittsburgh, announces a search for an Athletics Trainer/Assistant to the Director of Athletics, with employment beginning July 1, 2025. The Athletic Trainer/Assistant to the Director of Athletics is a multi-faceted role that involves providing comprehensive sports medicine services to student-athletes while also assisting the Director of Athletics with various administrative tasks. The position requires a deep understanding of sports medicine, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with athletes, coaches, parents, and colleagues. This position requires an individual with a flexible schedule to manage both administrative duties and attend designated games and practices that occur after school, in the evenings, and/or on weekends.

The Athletic Trainer/Assistant to the Director of Athletics performs under the general direction of the Head of School and under the daily supervision of the Director of Athletics. The individual in this position provides support in a manner that advances and upholds the mission and philosophy of Winchester Thurston School.

Responsibilities

Athletic Trainer:

  • Evaluate and assess the physical condition of student-athletes, including injuries and illnesses
  • Administer first aid and emergency care as needed during practices and games
  • Develop and implement injury prevention and rehabilitation programs for student-athletes to (1) Oversee individualized rehabilitation plans for injured athletes, focusing on safe and efficient recovery; (2) Utilize modalities such as therapeutic exercises, manual therapy, and modalities (heat, cold, electrical stimulation) to add in recovery, (3) Monitor athletes’ progress and adjust rehabilitation plans, as necessary, and (4) Coordinate with other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive medical care is in place for student-athletes and to make determinations regarding student-athletes’ readiness to participate in sports, including pre-participation and post-injury/illness return
  • Educate student-athletes on injury prevention, proper nutrition, hydration, and overall wellness
  • Collaborate with coaching staff to ensure safe training techniques and proper warm-up/cool-down routines
  • Recognize and monitor psychosocial issues student athletes may be experiencing and refer student-athletes to appropriate professionals for intervention, if appropriate
  • Ensure proper medical records are in place in accordance with all governing guidelines (e.g., WPIAL, PIAA, HIPAA, etc.), including physical exams, documentation of injuries, treatments, and progress, etc.
  • Supervise strict adherence to physician standing orders
  • Maintain timely, accurate, and ongoing communication with coaches, athletes, parents, and healthcare professionals regarding athletes’ health and progress
  • Contribute to the development of an environment for student-athletes that is healthy, safe, equitable, and culturally diverse
  • Maintain appropriate licensure/certification to act as an athletic trainer
  • Stay updated on the latest research, trends, and developments in sports medicine and athletic training techniques
  • Participate in ongoing professional development, workshops, and conferences to enhance skills and knowledge
  • Perform other duties as assigned

_ Assistant to the Director of Athletics:_

  • Assist the Director of Athletics with various administrative tasks, including but not limited to managing student-athlete rosters, maintaining pre-season schedules, getting required health forms, scheduling and confirming referees, games, and practices, confirming fields and facilities, communicating with other schools’ athletic departments, and coordinating transportation
  • Utilize the school’s learning management software and systems to maintain updated calendars, rosters, and schedules
  • Establish and maintain a system to gather information from coaches to keep accurate records of individual and team statistics, including game results, attendance, and other statistics related to athletic events
  • Ensure timely and consistent communication with parents, student-athletes, teachers, coaches, other schools, transportation vendors, etc. when changes occur
  • Send early dismissal notices via email on a weekly basis to Middle and Upper School teachers, sometimes to include 5th grade teachers, as relevant
  • Conduct inventories and report status of supplies; order supplies as directed by the Director of Athletics
  • Schedule seasonal sports photos with the Director of Programs
  • Support the Director of Athletics in shares major Athletics accomplishments with the Marketing and Communications Office to publicize
  • Assist with ensuring compliance with relevant sports regulations and policies
  • Adhere to existing school and appropriate external regulatory safety policies and procedures
  • Complete appropriate documentation, including but not limited to, incident or injury reports
  • Work with the Director of Athletics to ensure that all members of the Athletics Department are contributing to a cohesive and supportive environment for student-athletes
  • Serve as an administrator/representative of the WT Athletics Department and the school at games or events, as needed and at the direction of the Director of Athletics
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Athletic Training or a related field is required along with Certification as an Athletic Trainer from the Board of Certification (BOC); a successful candidate will hold state licensure or be eligible for licensure as mandated by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
  • Prior experience in a high school or college athletic setting is desirable
  • Strong understanding of sports medicine, anatomy, physiology and injury
  • Excellent customer service skills, organizational skills, communication and interpersonal skills are critical to effectively manage both clinical and administrative duties
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which will include evenings and some weekends
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to travel to local games and practices is required

Pay: $26.50 - $31.25 per hour
