Winchester Thurston School, a Junior Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12 independent day school in Pittsburgh, announces a search for a Digital Communications Specialist. The Digital Communications Specialist provides key administrative support to the Director and Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications in articulating Winchester Thurston School’s distinct culture, programs, and values through compelling, consistent, and timely digital content. The individual in this position executes digital strategies that elevate the School’s brand and storytelling across platforms. The ideal candidate is a creative communicator and proactive storyteller who thrives in a fast-paced environment, possesses strong visual and written communication skills, and is comfortable working with constituents of all ages and backgrounds.
The Digital Communications Specialist performs under the general direction of the Head of School and under the daily supervision of the Director of Marketing and Communications. The individual in this position will work closely with the Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications and will collaborate with faculty, staff, and administrators to help capture the WT experience and share it in ways that connect and resonate with prospective families, current community members, alumni, and the broader public.
Responsibilities
Social Media
- Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Marketing & Communications to plan, create, and schedule content across WT’s official social media channels
- Capture authentic, high-quality photography and videography that highlights the WT experience across divisions
- Monitor engagement and interactions on social channels; respond to comments, messages, and tags in a timely, professional manner
- Stay current with social media trends, tools, and best practices to enhance reach and engagement
Email Communications
- Draft, format, and distribute branded email communications using the school’s email platform (e.g., Finalsite)
- Support administrative teams in crafting effective messages and announcements that reflect WT’s values and style
- Manage and maintain email templates to ensure consistency in branding, voice, and visual identity
Newsletters
- Produce and distribute weekly and biweekly newsletters for various school divisions and departments
- Partner with faculty and staff to curate meaningful content and visuals that inform, inspire, and engage families
- Ensure newsletters are visually appealing, accessible across devices, and aligned with WT’s brand guidelines
Website and MyWT Portal
- Serve as the primary content editor for the school website and internal community portal (MyWT)
- Update pages regularly with news stories, event information, photos, calendars, and other community resources
- Collaborate with departments across campus to keep content timely, accurate, and mission-aligned
- Audit pages for readability, broken links, outdated content, and accessibility compliance
Digital Media & Brand Assets
- Maintain and organize WT’s growing archive of digital assets, including photo libraries, logos, and brand templates
- Support the creation of branded print and digital materials for events, programs, and admissions/enrollment efforts
- Deliver print and digital marketing materials and branded merchandise to key departments in a timely and professional manner
- Uphold the school’s visual identity and editorial standards across all communication channels
Cross-Departmental Collaboration
- Attend and document campus events, classroom activities, and special programs to support real-time and future storytelling needs
- Work closely with various departments (including Advancement, Admissions, Athletics, Programs, and Division Directors) to meet communication goals
- Serve as a resource and advocate for brand consistency and digital storytelling within the WT community
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, English, Journalism, Digital Media, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience, is required. Prior experience in a communications, marketing, or digital media role (ideally within a school or nonprofit organization) is preferred. The ideal candidate will have exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills with the ability to adapt voice and tone for different audiences. Proficiency with social media platforms and tools (e.g., Meta Business Suite, Later, Canva, Hootsuite) is necessary, including experience with content management systems (CMS). Photography and videography skills with an eye for storytelling, composition, and editing is strongly preferred. Familiarity with digital tools including Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere) and Canva is required. The successful candidate will have strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize tasks in a deadline-driven environment. The ability and enthusiasm for working in an educational setting and engaging with people of all ages and backgrounds (including students, faculty, and families) is required, along with a collaborative spirit and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in communication practices.
