Job Summary
The Transportation Specialist plays a key role in developing and implementing a comprehensive transportation system to ensure accurate, safe, and efficient student transportation. This position requires strong coordination, customer service, and organizational skills to support student achievement by serving internal and external stakeholders—including schools, districts, and government entities. The specialist will also maintain up-to-date student bus assignments and transportation records.
Duties and Responsibilities- include, but are not limited to:
- Ensure transportation activities are efficient and align with state laws, district policies, and contracts
- Coordinate and partner with transportation providers (currently M&J and EASTCONN)
- Collaborate with school and external stakeholders (administrators, parents, agencies, vendors) to maintain transportation programs.
- Develop and implement bus routes
- Respond to incidents, accidents, and complaints
- Provide immediate and emergency routing support, as needed
- Reconcile transportation budget accounts using MUNIS
- Provide transportation quotes and manage compliance with BOE purchasing policies
- Manage purchase orders, invoices, and vendor records using MUNIS
- Assist with field trips, staff orientation, and other district transportation needs
- Maintain annual school calendars for Windham student programs (e.g., magnet, vocational).
- Ensure confidentiality of student records
- Perform other duties as assigned
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written
- Strong interpersonal skills for working with diverse teams, vendors, and the public
- Ability to stay calm under pressure and maintain confidentiality
- Intermediate to advanced technical skills for data collection and reporting
Preferred Skills:
- Familiarity with Student Information Systems, such as PowerSchool
Qualifications:
- High school diploma
- Minimum 5 years of secretarial or relevant administrative experience
Alternative qualifications may be considered at the discretion of the Superintendent
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bilingual, English and Spanish
- Associate’s degree in a related field
- 5 years of experience in a related field
