What are the responsibilities and job description for the Student Assistant Program Counselor (SAP) position at Windham Southwest Supervisory Union?
Job Summary: The SAP has primary responsibility for screening and referrals forstudents identified with mental health and substance use disorders, provide substanceabuse prevention education to students and staff.Reports to: TVMHS Principal (general oversight), and a licensed clinical supervisor ona monthly basis (clinical supervision)Responsibilities: Establish safe and supportive relationships with students and maintain a consistentpresence in the school. Attend required trainings regarding substance abuse prevention and use of theCRAFFT and GAIN screening tools. Provide intervention and screening to students identified as having mental healthor substance abuse issues. Develop and maintain relationships with appropriate outside agencies.
Make effective internal and external referrals for students with mental health orsubstance abuse issues for more specialized or intensive services as needed. Provide case management and aftercare services to students going to andreturning from treatment. Meet with concerned families and work with students and their parents/guardianswhere services are needed. Participate in the WSWSU Whole Wellness Team (WWT) and attend WWTmonthly meetings.
Plan and facilitate substance abuse prevention education presentations forTVMHS students. Plan and facilitate student support groups, where students are free to express theirfeeling and concerns, and learn to make behavior changes and develop skills.(Foster risk reduction and positive asset development). Implement the NOT (Not on Tobacco) youth tobacco cessation program. Participate as part of the Core Student Assistance Team (team of school staff froma variety of disciplines within the building, who work to identify students thatneed support).
Serve as a resource to school staff regarding substance use, abuse and prevention. Attend supervision on a monthly basis with a licensed clinician. Meet regularly with area SAP counselors to consider collaboration of services. Maintain records and statistics for school and district as directed.
Attend professional trainings and functions as directed. Attend monthly meetings as a member of the local community coalition: Deerfield Valley Community Partnership Adhere to federal regulations encoded in Title 42 CFR relative to confidentialityregulations for drug and alcohol counselors. In compliance with both 42 CFRPart 2 and HIPAA, the SAP will disclose information to the SAPs supervisor andschool principal when the SAP has concerns about a students safety orwillingness to participate in recommended programs relative to that studentssafety.Qualifications: Bachelors degree in a related field or commensurate experience preferred. At least three years of experience in a school support staff position or a relatedposition.
