Job Description For Lead Trainer

Position Overview: The Lead Trainer will oversee the development of training curriculum and manage both in-person and virtual classroom training for the Protective Services program. This role will also provide technical assistance related to training and curriculum areas. The Lead Trainer must ensure that the training program meets both national standards and the specific needs.

The Adult Protective Services (APS) Program

The Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs (EOEA) is responsible for administering the Commonwealth’s Elder Protective Services Program in accordance with M.G.L. c. 19A. The Adult Protective Services (APS) program, responds to reports of abuse and neglect of individuals aged 60 and older residing in the community. APS investigates cases of neglect, physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, as well as financial exploitation and self-neglect. Each year, APS receives approximately 36,400 reports, leading to investigations of over 16,000 cases and the addition of more than 9,000 cases into ongoing services. Given the challenging nature of this work—which often involves engagement with situations involving violence, substance abuse, and financial exploitation—Protective Services staff require comprehensive training to maintain the safety and well-being of themselves and the individuals they serve.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take the lead in developing training materials and curriculum that align with EOEA standards and national APS regulations.
  • Facilitate in-person and virtual classroom training sessions on key topics such as trauma-informed practices, ethics, mental health, leadership, worker safety, de-escalation, and more.
  • Collaborate with EOEA to design and implement a long-term training strategy that includes recommendations for training delivery methods and materials.
  • Provide ongoing technical assistance to EOEA and Protective Services agencies, helping to adapt training materials and practices as needed.
  • Manage the training schedule and ensure that the APS staff, supervisors, and program directors receive regular, high-quality training.
  • Collect feedback, measure training effectiveness, and adjust the curriculum as needed to continuously improve the program.
  • Work with EOEA to identify additional training needs and recommend subject matter experts (SMEs) to ensure the best possible training experience.
  • Support the creation of e-learning courses and multimedia training materials.
  • Keep records of all training activities and ensure that all sessions meet EOEA’s quality standards.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of national APS standards and regulations.
  • Significant experience delivering training for APS professionals, preferably across multiple states.
  • Proven expertise in creating training curricula and delivering both in-person and virtual training.
  • Experience in working with government agencies or nonprofits focused on protective services.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple training initiatives and work with a range of stakeholders.
  • Ability to collaborate with a diverse team of EOEA staff, APS agencies, and other external partners.
