Position Summary:
The Hand and Machine Cutter is responsible for managing the operations within the Cutting Department. This role involves cutting, shaping, and trimming materials using a variety of tools, including knives, blades, scissors, hand tools, power tools, bench-mounted tools, and specialized machinery like the I-9000 computerized cutter. The cutter shapes and prepares materials as per specifications to support production needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Operate cutting machinery and equipment; review job specifications to adjust machines and prepare required materials.
- Set and adjust machine stops and guides to control the depth, width, and length of cuts as specified by templates, rules, or scales.
- Mark cutting lines on materials using templates or layout patterns and identify defects such as stains, chips, or scratches.
- Position materials and workpieces for optimal cuts and efficient use of resources.
- Mount materials on cutting tables or the I-9000 machine and operate via button or pedal controls.
- Observe machine operations for any defects or malfunctions and measure workpieces to ensure accuracy.
- Fold, mark, and identify products with appropriate identification numbers.
- Replace or sharpen cutting tools as needed and route cut pieces for additional work using routers, grinders, and hand tools.
- Sort materials by size, type, or color, and transport items to designated work areas.
- Trim excess material and perform other tasks to prepare finished products for production.
- Troubleshoot and resolve machine issues; coordinate with the manufacturer if the machine experiences downtime to prevent production delays.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with electric hand tools and cutting machinery, especially the I-9000 cutting machine preferred.
- Strong problem-solving skills to follow written or oral instructions accurately.
- High school diploma or GED, or equivalent experience and/or training in a similar role.
- Ability to read and understand basic instructions, write simple correspondence, and communicate effectively in one-on-one or small group settings.
- Frequently required to talk or hear, sit, stand, walk, and use hands. May need to climb, balance, kneel, stoop, crouch, or crawl occasionally.
- Must be able to lift and move items up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
