Reports to: Environmental Protection Department Manager                                     
 
Salary (Grade): $19.28/hr housing allowance stipend

 Job Purpose & Position Overview 
The EPD Intern will support the Winnebago Tribe’s Environmental Protection Department as part of the GAP Internship Pilot Project. The intern will gain hands-on experience across multiple programs, including water quality, air quality, solid waste management, and GIS/GPS. Additionally, the intern will gain exposure to land conservation, infrastructure planning and sustainable development efforts. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to tribal environmental capacity building while developing professional skills in a real-world setting. 

Specific Job Duties/Responsibilities: 
  • Demonstrates the Winnebago Tribe’s core mission, vision, and values. 
  • Assist in environmental data collection and analysis across various programs. 
  • Assist with research to support environmental initiatives in water and air quality, and solid waste management. 
  • Participate in solid waste management activities, including waste audits, routine pick-up, and program development. 
  • Engage in community outreach and educational activities to promote environmental awareness. 
  • Rotate through each department to gain a holistic understanding of environmental protection work. 
  • Prepare reports and presentations on environmental findings and project outcomes. 
  • Attend training sessions and meetings as directed by the Environmental Protection Department Manager. 
  • Provide administrative support, including organizing and maintaining records, filing documents and digitizing physical files for improved accessibility.

Required Qualifications/Skills: 
  • Current enrollment in a college or university program, preferably in environmental science, biology, natural resources or a related field. 
  • Strong research, analytical, and organizational skills 
  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and data management tools 
  • Enthusiasm for learning and contributing to environmental stewardship efforts.

Physical Requirements: 
  • Normal office work which includes the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. 
  • Regularly required to walk, stand, and sit for extended periods of time and use hands to operate computer keyboard, phone, and various office equipment. 
  • While performing daily duties, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. 
 Mental Requirements: 
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines 
  • Strong reasoning and analysis skills 
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills. 
 Language Requirements: 
  • Must possess the ability to read, write, and speak the English language fluently. 
  • Must be able to continually and effectively employ professional verbal and written communications skills. 
Certificates, Licenses & Registrations: 
  • All applicants will comply with 45 CFR 1301, Subpart D, Section 1301.31, C and D, which require all prospective employees to sign a declaration prior to employment regarding all arrests and convictions of child abuse or violent felonies and to comply with PL 101-630 and PL 101-637 regarding criminal records check.
