0.45 FTE, 36 Hours a Pay Period
Days, Hours between 7 am - 7 pm
Weekends: Every Third Weekend

Position Overview:
The Health Unit Technician's primary responsibility is to provide clerical support and manage the flow of information with the appropriate staff members and physicians as needed. Responsible for documenting and relaying radio communication from all incoming emergency medical transport teams to emergency medical staff. The Health Unit Technician is also a trained auxiliary staff member who functions under the direction of a professional nurse to assist in providing necessary and desired services to patients in the Emergency Department as needed.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Monitors the Emergency Department (ED) patient tracking board for new orders placed by the ED providers, continues to accurately and efficiently enter orders into the electronic medical record (EMR) as necessary, demonstrates understanding of medical terminology by effectively communicating via written and verbal modalities. Collaborates with ancillary departments (i.e. Lab and Radiology) to best time completion of orders to ensure efficient patient flow through the ED.
- Receives all incoming radio traffic from incoming emergency vehicles and conveys this information to the professional staff of the Emergency Department in a timely manner.
- Coordinates treatments within the facility and/or prepares the appropriate documents necessary for patient transfer to another facility. Also assists patients in making follow-up appointments for care as needed. Utilizes the electronic consult tool in the EMR to assure accurate follow up for our patients as needed.
- Routes all charts and charge forms to their designated areas upon patient discharge and completion of the charting. Assures accurate disposition of any patient care data.
- Accurately enters required information into the computer database and verifies daily census. Ensures accuracy in compiling the monthly statistics. Assists the ED RN with room turn over and rooming of patients from triage when able.
- Is vigilant to the safety needs of patients, taking necessary precautions as warranted, and communicating concerns to the professional nurse in a timely manner. Reports malfunctioning equipment promptly and removes from the patient care area to maintain a safe environment.
- Maintains an orderly work environment and ensures an adequate supply of equipment and supplies to enable staff to provide quality and timely care. Maintains professional behavior and uses effective communication when dealing with all external and internal customers.
- Employs Winona Health protocol for telephone/radio courtesy in forwarding, screening, and placing phone calls.

Skills and Experience:
Required
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Basic computer skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook. Familiar with Patient Information Database (Cerner)
- Typing skills of at least 60 words per minute
- Must be able to demonstrate a proficient understanding of medical terminology
Preferred:
- Current CPR Certification
- National Registered Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
- Completion of a Medical Secretary or a Health Unit Coordinator Program is preferred
