What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lab Assistant/Phlebotomist position at Winona Health?

Hours scheduled between 6 am and 9 pm
Every third weekend and holiday rotation
The Lab Assistant (LA) provides receptionist, registration, secretarial, and specimen collection duties to support laboratory services. The LA must demonstrate excellent customer service skills, be detail-oriented and able to multi-task well. Requires previous phlebotomy training and/or experience.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Performs phlebotomy, venipuncture, and other specimen collection procedures in compliance with Winona Health policies and regulatory requirements.
- Knowledgeable of proper specimen collection requirements. Performs phlebotomy for patients of all ages in compliance with the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) standards and established laboratory policies and procedures.
- Performs specimen check-in processes and distribution of blood, urine, and culture specimens received into the lab
- Provides urine drug screen collection and processing services according to established
policies and procedures. Assists with processing specimens for referral lab testing. - Performs general clerical duties including answering phones, faxing documents, order entry, result entry, database entry for send-out tests, and multiple other clerical tasks as needed.
- Provides off-site phlebotomy services to residents in area nursing homes and for community health screening clinics and other Winona Health-approved services.
- May be trained in the preparation and processing of Thin Prep PAP Smears.
Skills and Experience:
Required:
- High school/GED/equivalent.
- Requires phlebotomy training and/or experience.
- Phlebotomy course completion.
- Knowledgeable and skilled at proper specimen collection requirements for patients of all ages.
Preferred:
- Basic computer skills. Word. Excel. Access or other database.
- Patient information database (Cerner, EMR, American Data).
