Qualification Requirements:

- Completed at least 2 years of study (defined as a minimum of 48 credit hours) at an institution of higher education; or
- Obtained an associate's (or higher) degree; or
- Met a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate through a formal State or local academic assessment: i. Knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, mathematics; and ii. Knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing, reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics readiness, as appropriate.
- Knowledge of children with disabilities of special education students, and special education teaching methods preferred.
- Ability to speak effectively.
- Demonstrated broad knowledge of academic subject matter being taught to students desired.
- Basic computer skills
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to communicate courteously, efficiently and effectively with a variety of individuals, including students, faculty, administrators, parents, and representatives of outside organizations.
- Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with peers, subordinates, supervisors, parents, and outside agencies.
- Ability to show patience, respect and compassion in working with students.
- Ability to effectively resolve conflicts and handle stress.
- Experience working with children/adolescents.
- Ability to assist students physically as required.
- Ability to remain calm and efficient in responding to medical emergencies.
- Reliable attendance at work and punctuality is required for the position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Instructional, Behavioral and Physical Support:
- Adapt general classroom material/methods as appropriate to meet the needs of students, in consultation with the classroom and/or special education teacher.
- Facilitate social and inclusive interactions among the student and his/her peers in the regular student environment.
- Implement the program developed by the IEP team.
- Participate in various community activities and field trips with students.
- Assist in developing, compiling and organizing instructional materials, under the direction of the classroom teacher or special educator.
- Assist students as required with self-care and other health needs as identified by the student specific plan.
- Implement instructional and behavioral programs for students, under the general direction of classroom and/or special education teachers. This includes working with students, both individually and in small groups, in a variety of academic areas and functional skills.
- Implement and practice behavior management/modification plans and programs for and with students.
- Assist and/or instruct students in functional skills, such as general behavior, dressing/undressing for outdoors, care of belongings, insertion and adjustment of hearing aids and use of other special equipment, and other areas as assigned.
- Support assigned students with their classroom work in a separate learning environment on a temporary basis as needed or requested.
- Record a variety of data related to student performance, progress and behavior.
- Manage student learning material and maintain a student performance record through data collection on a daily basis as necessary or requested.
- Supervise students during lunch, recess, study hall and/or other non-instructional times.
- Supervise student(s) when the teacher is absent from the room.
- Facilitate social and inclusive interactions among the student and their peers in the regular student environment.
- Supervise students in the classroom, gymnasium, playground, cafeteria or other common areas before school begins and/or while they are waiting for transportation home.
- Cover for other Instructional Assistants as requested for lunch/break coverage or absences.
- Attend and participate in all relevant training sessions, meetings and professional growth activities as requested and/or required such as CPR, First Aid, data collection, entry and graphing. These meetings/training may take place during non-student days (e.g., during teacher in-service days).
- Assist in creating and maintaining a positive, inclusive and respectful work and learning environment.
- Keep up-to-date with best practices in the field to support continuous growth and development
