FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE

Performs skilled duties in the cleaning and care of the school system's buildings.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• May serve as the primary WS/FCS custodial presence in a school/facility.
• Work various shifts.
• Performs special project cleaning as necessary.
• Coordinates and participates in the maintaining of assigned areas of the school system's buildings, reporting any custodial concerns to school administration.
• Monitors boilers, heating, and air conditioning systems for abnormal leaks or outages. Notifies school administration when problems occur so that Maintenance Requests can be submitted. 
• Opens and secures facilities as required.
• Cleans bathroom fixtures, water coolers, floors, ceilings and other hard surfaces. Restocks paper products and soap as needed.
• Mops, vacuums, and dust mops floors regularly as needed.  Participates in the daily cleanup of the cafeteria.
• Cleans internal and external windows.
• Empties trash.
• Orders or request cleaning supplies and paper products required to maintain school building. 
• May be responsible for receipt and storage of deliveries and/or supplies.
• Moves furniture / sets up for school or other events.
• Strips and waxes floors during the summer months and / or intersessions, or as needed.
• Shovels snow from walk areas when necessary. Ensures walkways are cleared at all times.
• Assures that public grounds are clean and free from debris.
• Receives high lift training and is expected to perform high bay cleaning. 
• Receives ladder training and is expected to clean light lenses / replace light bulbs at all heights.
• Responds to trouble calls from the principal, assistant principal or other staff.
• Responds to alarm calls from security system as necessary/assigned.
• Performs monthly fire extinguisher inspections.
• Performs related duties as required.

 REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of standard cleaning procedures, chemicals, products and equipment
• Knowledge of tools, equipment and supplies used in custodial and building maintenance services
• Knowledge of work hazards, safety techniques, lifting procedures, and handling of materials that may include waste and bloodborne pathogens
• Knowledge of basic mathematical skills to understand ratios and percentages for mixing cleaning solutions
• Knowledge of basic computer skills, (e.g. email, excel, word)
• Knowledge of project planning and resource allocation.
• Knowledge of relevant equipment and ability to maintain a safe environment for the protection of people and property.
• Ability to work at varying heights with the use of ladders and scissor lifts.
• Ability to report for daily shift at varying sites each day.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, OSHA guidelines, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals (e.g., SDS sheets, etc.).
• Ability to clean and care for assigned areas and equipment.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective relationship with those contacted in the course of work.
• Ability to perform work assignments on varying shifts
• Ability to drive to more than one location during the work week

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

• Minimum: High School Diploma/GED and two years of full-time, professional experience in custodial work.
• Desirable: High School Diploma/GED and four years’ experience in custodial work with two years as lead custodian or day porter. 

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:

• Valid NC Driver’s license required
• Reliable transportation

 Pay Grade 60 - $2,838.63 Monthly  - Full Time Position
