Position Summary
The Director of Learning Support Services ensures that students have the necessary support to succeed academically, inclusive of overseeing tutoring programs, academic coaching, and resources that help students develop effective study and time management skills. In partnership with the Director of Services for Students with Disabilities, The Director of Learning Support Services ensures that appropriate accommodations and resources are provided to create an inclusive learning environment and to comply with legal requirements like the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The Director of Learning Support Services is essential bridging the gap between Academic Advising and ASPIRE by offering targeted support services to reduce dropout rates and increase retention by ensuring that students who struggle academically receive timely assistance, ultimately contributing to higher graduation rates and overall academic success. They design and implement programs that address academic skills development, such as workshops on writing, research methods, and exam preparation. These programs help students strengthen their foundational skills and adapt to university-level coursework.
  • Oversee all aspects of the daily operation of the Tutoring, SI, and Testing services areas of the Academic Success Center.
  • Assist in the development of workshops. Lead workshops.
  • Develop and implement various forms of educational technologies in support of tutorial and testing services including online tutorial and testing services.
  • Provide direction to tutoring and academic support staff and tutors in planning and organizing tutoring and ongoing trainings.
  • Keep current on research, best practices and new initiatives regarding tutoring, testing, and academic support.
  • Coordinate, monitor and analyze data and prepare reports, including yearly program review updates and evaluations.
  • Develop outreach and publicity efforts to create awareness of tutoring, testing and academic support services through a variety of communication channels and methods.
  • Collaborate with relevant departments to promote the tutoring, testing and academic support programs.
  • Maintain the content of the tutoring and testing support website and course management site.
  • Assesses testing needs in cooperation with academic departments and manages testing and proctoring examinations to students, staff, and community members.
  • Manages testing center activities, including maintaining a testing center environment sensitive to user requirements and in accordance with the national standards.
  • Participate in professional development activities.
  • Interpret and apply county, state and federal policy and legislation as it relates to the area.
  • Designs and delivers Learning Center workshops and develops small learning groups
  • that strengthen science and math skills.
  • Help students improve study skills and will develop and present learning and study strategy workshops or guided sessions in in-person or virtual formats. These skills include but are not limited to development of reading, test-taking, note-taking, time management, and standardized test preparation strategies.
  • Work with students to also develop improved analytical skills, mathematical skills, problem solving skills, investigative skills, and communication skills.
  • Devise strategies to assess student academic needs and provide intentional academic student support
  • Develop and conduct workshops and collaborate with faculty and staff to ensure academic support efforts are reinforced by the campus community in and out of the classroom
  • Collaborate effectively with academic and administrative departments across the University that are involved in efforts to strengthen success for undergraduate students, including working collaboratively with University partners as barrier/gateway courses to develop intentional interventions for student success in and out of the classroom.
  • Oversee processes for hiring and supervision of staff, graduate assistants and students
  • Conduct observations of faculty and tutors providing constructive feedback to help staff and student workers build needed skills and develop their potential
  • Serve as direct supervisor to tutoring, SI, and testing staff and faculty liaison
  • Oversee goal setting and annual review for all personnel under your span of care.

Department Required Skills
  • Master’s Degree or higher from an accredited university with a track record of excellence in teaching and learning.
  • Three years or more of experience with academic support services in the areas of Testing, Tutoring, SI, Writing and Reading programs.
  • Two years or more of experience working with university students.
  • The selected applicant will also be required to build relationships with all the Deans, Chairpersons and the individual faculty members to ensure their awareness of the Testing, Tutoring, SI, Writing and Reading programs and work collaboratively to integrate academic support within the curriculum, especially to ensure SI program and tutoring
