Position Summary
Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) is seeking a skilled and motivated Facility Maintenance Technician – Mechanical Trade to join our Department of Housing and Residence Life. This critical role will support the maintenance and repair of mechanical systems within our student housing facilities, ensuring a safe, comfortable, and well-maintained environment for our students and staff. - HVAC Maintenance: Perform regular maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to ensure proper function across student housing facilities.
- Plumbing: Maintain and repair plumbing systems, including pipes, fixtures, drains, and water heaters.
- Electrical and Mechanical Systems: Troubleshoot and repair electrical and mechanical systems, including lighting, motors, and other components.
- Preventative Maintenance: Conduct routine inspections and preventative maintenance on mechanical systems to avoid downtime and improve system longevity.
- Work Orders: Respond to service requests promptly, completing work orders and ensuring all maintenance issues are resolved effectively.
- Safety and Compliance: Adhere to safety standards, building codes, and environmental regulations while performing tasks, ensuring the safety of students, staff, and the general public.
- Collaboration: Work with the Facilities Management team to address maintenance needs and contribute to a collaborative environment focused on improving the student living experience.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in mechanical maintenance or a related field, preferably in a university or large residential setting.
- Formal training or certifications in HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, or other mechanical trades is highly desirable.
Skills and Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, plumbing, electrical systems, and general mechanical maintenance.
- Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair mechanical and electrical issues effectively.
- Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment used in mechanical maintenance.
- Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in facility maintenance.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with students, staff, and contractors.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.
Required License or Certification
Prior general maintenance experience and high school diploma or equivalent is needed as well as customer service skills and professional attitude.

Perform general maintenance on Housing and Residence Life facilities, grounds, and equipment at various sites including electrical, carpentry, plumbing, masonry, and painting tasks. Repair and structures such as showers, floors, sinks, walls, carpets and roofs. Perform minor repairs, troubleshooting, and adjustment of locks on cabinets, closets, and desks.
