JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Director of Safety and Security is responsible for securing the institution’s property, assets, and people through the effective and efficient deployment of trained personnel and technologies, the development and execution of the strategic mission and vison of the Security Department, and the development and execution of a robust safety and security program for the institution based on industry standards, best practices, and risk and vulnerability assessments carried out by the Director of Safety and Security and outside consultation, when appropriate.

As part of the institution’s senior leadership team, the Director of Safety and Security will provide insight and leadership to ensure all initiatives, programs, events, and activities are carried out safely and do not jeopardize the security of the institution’s assets or people. The Director of Safety and Security will also oversee the selection, installation, maintenance, and integration of all systems and technologies related to life safety, building and personnel security, and collection security.

Success in this position will be achieved, in part, by the Director of Safety and Security’s ability to create and maintain an institution-wide culture of safety and security among all staff, accurately forecast financial needs on an annual basis, achieving coordination and compliance with all other departments and functions throughout the institution, and demonstrating return on investments (ROI) as it relates to expenditures for training, technology, and personnel.

Compensation: $90,000 / year

Work Schedule:  Variable depending on needs of the department; generally 35 hours / week. This position may be asked to work weekends, evenings, nights & holidays and may be called in during weather or safety emergencies

Responsibilities:

1. Devises policies and procedures related to areas such as business continuity planning, loss prevention, fraud prevention, emergency operations, collections safety and security, and life safety.
2. Identifies and implements security initiatives and standards to ensure security is maintained and updates, as appropriate.
3. Creates, implements, and maintains workplace violence awareness and prevention program as part of the overall safety culture of the institution.
4. Conducts regular reviews and audits of the security department and function.
5. Oversees the security of estate property, including museum and library collections.
6. Plans, organizes, and implements all collection and life safety initiatives, investigation, and inspection activities.
7. Maintains liaison with local, state, and federal emergency services agencies and departments and coordinates activities as needed. Coordinates requests for service or mutual aid with local and state emergency services for high-profile activities or special events.
8. Effectively communicates safety concerns, incidents, and initiatives with senior leadership, staff, and Board of Trustees along with recommend course of mitigation.
9. Responsible for the financial planning and management of the security department. Enforces departmental policies, rules, regulations and procedures, and employee related functions.
10. Receives and directs the investigation of staff/visitor complaints regarding employee conduct and departmental procedure.
11. Directs the selection, training, assignment, and supervision of security personnel. Ensures the efficient use of all security staff. Manages subordinate supervisory staff. Conducts orientation and communicates training programs to direct subordinates within the department as well as new hires throughout the institution.  Conducts or reviews performance evaluations of security officers, supervisors, and managers.
12. Identifies, deploys, and oversees the operations and maintenance of technical systems for security and life safety.
13. Provide safety and security training for all incoming University of Delaware students.
14. Updates and distributes the Winterthur Staff Emergencies Booklet.
