Paving Equipment Operator Apprenticeship

This comprehensive program is designed to provide hands-on training and classroom instruction to develop skilled professionals who can excel in asphalt paving crews. Successful graduates will earn a nationally recognized credential from the U.S. Department of Labor, validating their expertise in the field. The apprenticeship program combines on-the-job training with classroom learning, with a maximum duration of two years.
What you will do:
- Engage in classroom assignments and on-the-job training during designated time periods.
- Operate and maintain a variety of heavy equipment, including Brooms, Rollers, Skidsteers, and Shuttle Buggies.
- Perform various tasks related to traffic control, asphalt raking, and general labor.
Physical Demands:
- Stand for extended periods and perform bending, stooping, and crouching as necessary.
- Occasionally work with hands raised overhead while operating power tools or hand tools for cleaning purposes.
- Lift objects weighing at least 50 pounds individually and up to 90 pounds with assistance.
- Possess manual dexterity to operate a wheelbarrow and use hand tools like shovels, rakes, and pickaxes. Must also be able to communicate using proper hand signals for truck-related tasks.
- Walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground, in various weather conditions.
- Safely climb on and off heavy mobile equipment.
- Remain alert and aware of multiple activities on the construction site, including the movements of other employees, contractors, stationary equipment, and mobile machinery.
Working Conditions:
- The work environment may expose employees to high levels of noise periodically.
- All work is performed outdoors, regardless of weather conditions.
- Job tasks may involve exposure to substances commonly found in road construction or near equipment, such as grease, diesel fuel, gasoline, and asphalt.
- Regular proximity to heavy equipment, moving machinery, and traffic is to be expected.
What you will need: (Minimum qualifications)
- High School Diploma/GED or Level 2 TABE exam scores of 442 (Reading) and 449 (Math).
- Valid Driver's License.
- Ability to comprehend work instructions and communicate effectively with supervisors and fellow employees on the job site.
