The Traffic Control Supervisor is to supervise, coordinate, and schedule a crew of 3-10 construction employees for daily traffic control operations covering multiple jobs in assigned area. This includes subcontractors or any temp labor associated with traffic control operations. The TCF is tasked with ensuring all closures meet or exceed ATSSA and MUTCD requirements. The TCF is also responsible for all traffic control devices in use or storage. This includes signs, cones, barrels, and etc. The TCF will be a working supervisor. To be successful at accomplishing this Supervisor must be able to delegate responsibilities to his team and must utilize the assistance of the Safety Department, job-site Foreman, Superintendents and management.
JOB SITE RESPONSIBILITY
- Assess sites well in advance of to determine and coordinate proper traffic control needed.
- Perform daily JHA informing your crew of the daily plan, risks, and giving them the information, they need to do their work.
- Plan for tomorrow. Communicate that plan with a daily schedule to all lines of business.
- Be able to communicate to your crew 1 hour 30 minutes prior to the start of the shift if there is a change in plans.
- Review the weekly schedule and plan accordingly with help of Superintendents.
- Make sure you have the information for upcoming projects.
- Ensure daily JHA (analyzing the hazards and minimizing the potential for accidents and injury) are being done specifically with flaggers or lane closure crews.
- Maintain a copy of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, KNOW IT!
- Build a team that looks out for the safety of the others on the crew.
- Hold the crew accountable to follow Company and regulatory safety procedures.
- Do not be led by the inspector but lead the inspector, know your project traffic control plans and specification better than they do.
- Handle customers’ requests in a professional manor, you represent the Company. Never ignore their requests. Is that request covered in the plans or specifications? If not, check with the Superintendent.
- Maintain good customer relationships. Solve the issues as best you can on the job but don’t argue, hand-off the issue to your Superintendent.
CREW & EMPLOYEES
- Organize and coordinate the daily activities of each crew members
- Communicate the plan to the crew members and FOLLOW-UP to make sure they understand.
- Expect that each employee, when given direction, will perform the work as directed without delay, with efficiency, and according to MUTCD. You will get what you expect from your employees.
- Monitor employee attendance and tardiness and discipline when necessary.
- Coach crews by letting them know what you expect and follow-up with feedback when they meet those expectations and when they do not.
- Teach crews the knowledge needed to do the work
- Train crews by showing them, observing them doing the work and providing them feedback.
- Build a team, do not accept disfunction between crew members, deal with issues and utilize your Superintendents when issues repeated.
- Cross-train so that the crew will never miss a beat if someone is not at work.
- Know your employees, each person is motivated differently. Know what it takes to get the most from the team and from each employee.
EQUIPMENT
- Ensure signs, barrels, cones, and other traffic control devices are stored onsite and at shops in a nice orderly manner.
- Make sure all devices meet MUTCD Standards.
- Responsible for issuing mobile devices to each individual. (Arrow boards and Message boards)
