Non-Paid Internship - Waukesha Adult Court Services

General Information on Population:

The justice involved individuals in our Adult Court Services Programs are referred from multiple sources but are all involved in different stages of the Waukesha Court System. Depending on the program, some individuals are court ordered to our bail monitoring pretrial programs or on a formal DPA contract, or as a post-conviction alternative to incarceration sentence option.

Brief Description of Program / Project:

The justice involved Adult Services in Waukesha consists of our Pretrial bail monitoring programs, our Treatment Courts and our Day Report Center.

Pretrial Bail Monitoring:

Pretrial bail monitoring includes supervision of individuals charged with either a misdemeanor or a felony, pending trial or adjudication. The purpose of the program is to ensure the individuals appear for Court Hearings and assist in referrals to community-based services such as AODA or mental health treatment. The Public Safety Assessment is used to determine levels of supervision and components of supervision. The internship/practicum will expose the student to multiple entry points in the Justice System and will intersect with different system partners. The practicum will entail observing and obtaining hands on experience in all aspects of the case management including intakes, on-going case management, making referrals, as well as practice in creating documentation to the Courts.

Intoxicated Driver Intervention Program:

The Intoxicated Driver Intervention Program (IDIP) provides supervision of persons who have been charged with a criminal Operating While Intoxicated Offense (OWI). The program's goal is to encourage treatment as soon as possible after arrest. The internship/practicum will expose the student to multiple entry points in the Justice System and will interact with different system partners. The Practicum will entail observing and obtaining hands-on experience in all aspects of the case management including intakes, on-going case management, making referrals, as well as practice in creating documentation for the Courts.

Operating While Intoxicated Treatment Courts (OWITC):

The OWITC provides intensive supervision and case management for third and fourth offense operating while intoxicated drivers, to help individuals break the cycle of driving impaired, improve their chances of a sober and healthy life, and contribute to a safe community. OWITC is a 5-phase program and participants move through each phase, depending on their compliance, towards graduation. Participants must comply with regular court appearances with the OWITC staffing team, including the Judge, who actively monitors each case and determines incentives and sanctions and movement through the program. The internship/practicum will expose the student to multiple entry points in the Justice System and will interact with different system partners on the staffing team. The Practicum will entail observing and obtaining hands-on experience in all aspects of the case management including intakes, on-going case management, making referrals, as well as practice in creating documentation for the Courts.

Drug Treatment Court (DTC):

The DTC provides intensive supervision and case management of individuals with substance use disorders, in an effort to break the cycle of addiction, improve the chances of a sober, crime free, and healthy life and contribute to a safe community. DTC is a 5-phase program, and participants move through each phase, depending on their compliance, towards graduation. Participants must comply with regular court appearances with the DTC staffing team, including the Judge, who actively monitors each case and determines incentives, sanctions, and movement through the program. Each participant is offered peer support services throughout all five phases of the program, in an effort to increase their chances of success and each participant has the opportunity to participate in the peer support mentor training to become a peer mentor upon successful completion of the program. The internship/practicum will expose the student to multiple entry points in the Justice System and will interact with different system partners on the staffing team. The Practicum will entail observing and obtaining hands-on experience in all aspects of the case management including intakes, on-going case management, making referrals, as well as practice in creating documentation for the Courts.

Day Report Center (DRC):

The program provides intensive supervision and monitoring of adult individuals referred by the Waukesha County Circuit Courts as an alternative to incarceration at the Huber Facility. Individuals can also be referred as part of a pre-charge or post-charge diversion prosecution agreement offered through the DA's office or referred directly by the Court as a sentencing option. Supervision includes placement on electronic monitoring and Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitoring, weekly appointments at the DRC, routine alcohol testing, and drug testing as necessary. DRC staff conduct risk and needs assessments, provide individualized support, including offering participants opportunities to engage in evidence-based curriculums/tools including Carey Guides and Thinking for a Change, refer to community resources, and monitor involvement in treatment and other services to meet offenders' needs. The internship/practicum will expose the student to multiple entry points in the justice system and will interact with different system partners on the staffing team. The Practicum will entail observing and obtaining hands-on experience in all aspects of the case management including intakes, on-going case management, making referrals, as well as practice in creating documentation for the Courts.

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions

  • Perform basic computer functions

    Training Requirements:

  • HIPPA Training (as required)

  • Mandatory Reporter Training (as required)

  • Any other applicable training

Health Requirements:

  • Be able to perform basic case management duties.
