NURSING SUPERVISOR
Position Summary
Under the general supervision of the Nursing Supervisor (DON), this position administers and directs nursing services for an assigned licensed building on the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King (WVHK) campus. As a member of the nursing management team, the Shift Nursing Supervisor supervises direct and indirect patient care; collaborates in the development, initiation, monitoring and evaluation of programs that ensure quality patient care; and ensures appropriate staffing and compliance with state, federal and Veterans Administration (VA) regulations, and the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) and WVHK policies and procedures. The incumbent has supervisory responsibility and accountability for all nursing employees during the assigned shift, and the cost-effective utilization of staff, equipment and other resources assigned to Nursing Services. This position focuses on quality using WDVA’s Mission & Philosophy as a guide to care provision.
Goals and Worker Activities
45% A. Administration and Direction of Nursing Services to Ensure Quality Member Care
A1. Plan, organize, and direct the nursing services being delivered on the assigned shift.
A2. Review the utilization of staff and ensure appropriate staff is available for the assigned shift and following shifts as needed.
A3. Assist in the provision of programs, in collaboration with staff development, administration, and the building’s DON.
A4. Oversee orientation for new staff, in coordination with staff development, administration, and the DON.
A5. Make rounds a minimum of once-per-shift physically or as directed by the DON or the building’s Veterans Home Assistant Administrator (Executive Director).
A6. Identify and resolve any problems discovered during rounds.
A7. Make recommendations for member room changes and new admission room assignments to the DON or Executive Director.
A8. Inform the Executive Director, DON and Assistant DON (ADON) of problems encountered, actions taken, and outcomes.
A9. Assist in reviewing, tracking, and following up on all medication error reports and discrepancies with the narcotic count records, in collaboration with the Executive Director, DON, ADON, and Pharmacy.
A10. Facilitate for members and/or staff to identify and define problem/s, remove barriers to problem resolution, communicate, and educate each other, create possible interventions, make recommendations, implement change, and evaluate outcomes.
A11. Provide hands-on assistance to staff during emergency situations.
A12. Assist with appropriate inventorying, storage, and maintenance of equipment in buildings.
A13. Assist the Executive Director, DON and/or ADON in survey processes as directed.
A14. Report potential abuse, neglect, and misappropriation issues and complete follow-up investigation and report development as directed.
A15. Submit reportable incident issues to the VA and complete Root Cause Analysis as directed.
A16. Ensure Infection Prevention principles are adhered to and process COVID tests for residents as needed.
35% B. Supervision of Nursing Staff
B1. Conduct staff meetings to provide an opportunity for staff to participate in decision making and problem solving, in collaboration with DON and ADON.
B2. Perform supervisory responsibilities of job definition, recruitment, selection, counseling, and coaching for shift staff.
B3. Implement the WDVA Affirmative Action/Civil Rights Compliance Plan within areas of responsibility, in compliance with federal and state laws.
B4. Assign workload to employees, establish and enforce performance standards, and conduct employee performance evaluations.
B5. Conduct investigations of potential work rule violations or member formal complaints, in collaboration with building’s DON and/or ADON.
B6. Participate in disciplinary actions, including recommendations to the Human Resources Supervisor for formal discipline of staff members.
B7. Ensure all new staff receive orientation to the building and/or shift s/he is working.
B8. Approve staff leave requests and timesheets.
B9. Fill in for other Nursing Supervisors, as assigned.
15% C. Participation as a Member of the Nursing Services Management Team
C1. Attend, participate in, and chair supervisory Nursing Services meetings/committees and other meetings/committees, as assigned.
C2. Participate in WVHK’s Quality Assurance-Performance Improvement (QAPI) program by completing work unit, building, and facility studies in collaboration with DON/ADON.
C3. Assist with the implementation of corrective actions and process change based on QAPI study outcomes.
C4. Participate in developing, revising and implementing policies and procedures and educating/training staff on these changes.
C5. Establish positive relationships with other work units to facilitate efficient nursing services and ensure quality service to members.
5% D. Other Duties as Assigned
D1. Attend educational institutes, seminars, in-service programs, or formal education, including mandatory staff development offerings.
D2. Fill in for direct care staff as the need arises.
D3. Complete additional duties as assigned.
Special Requirement
