Shift: 1st shift (8:00 am - 4:30 pm; Monday - Friday)
Summary:
Requires an in-depth knowledge and extensive experience of laboratory techniques and equipment. Within high volume testing clinical lab departments, have the diverse skills and knowledge to assist laboratory technologists and technicians in performing various moderate complexity laboratory tests and research. Position also includes completing instrument maintenance procedures, assisting with testing validations and quality control, supply management, as well other tasks assigned by leadership.
Responsibilities:
1. Works cooperatively with the MLS, MLT, and other MLA staff to meet the operational requirements of the assigned technical work area, effectively adjusting work assignments to meet the changing demands of the workload.
2. Proficiently performs all preanalytical processing details, including preparing specimens for routine analysis and aliquoting specimens into appropriate containers with appropriate volumes.
3. Accurately and efficiently performs moderate level complexity testing, routine, and/or waived technical testing procedures, under direct supervision as defined by section or shift.
4. Proficiently utilizes LIS system and other computer applications, including, but not limited to, specimen tracking system, Microsoft Office software, etc.
5. Recognizes and investigates problems thoroughly and takes corrective action as necessary. Involves peers if appropriate. For problems and issues that cannot be effectively resolved, notifies test system primary operator or resource in a timely manner.
6. Accurately checks operational worklists and utilizes appropriate missing specimen checklists to assist in locating missing specimens.
7. Accurately and efficiently assists in the preparation of media and/or reagents according to section requirements.
8. Assists with tracking departmental inventory, stocking inventory, rotating stock as needed, and communicating supply shortfalls to the manager.
9. Accurately performs clerical duties, participate in assigned committees, assist with research studies, and accreditation tasks as assigned including, but not limited to calibration of pipettes, timer accuracy checks, and thermometer verification.
10. Successfully completes all competency assessments required. Follows required performance improvement plans as needed. Effectively performs all work within defined error limits.
Qualifications:
1. High school diploma AND
2. At least one of the following:
A) Two years of clinical laboratory experience including, but not limited to:
1. Accurate and timely performance of assigned procedures to support technical laboratory operations, including tasks listed below in the job standards/responsibilities.
2. Understanding of and strict adherence to department and laboratory-wide policies
3. Accurate performance and reporting of select laboratory tests; experience with performing moderate level complexity testing preferred.
4. Accurate performance and documentation of quality control procedures
5. Accurate and timely data entry and verification, if appropriate, utilizing a Laboratory Information System
B) Current enrollment in or previously attended a post-secondary school pursuing a science or healthcare-related field, with achievement of an associates degree preferred. 3. Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
4. Ability to work well in both team settings and independently
5. Ability to use good judgement, take initiative and adapt to changes in work environment
