SUMMARY
The Assistant Director of Mission Operations is responsible for supporting the Director of Mission Operations (DMO) in the work of overseeing the operational finances and accounting for home and world mission fields. This position works in association with the DMO and coordinates with the home and world mission administrators to evaluate, plan, and coordinate mission programs as well as to carry out the directives of the respective mission boards and committees once those programs are approved. The position also assists in managing the office operational policies and procedures, and oversight of the budget development process. The Assistant Director of Mission Operations makes sure mission fields are following already established synod processes and supports the implementation of these.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
- Serves as the secondary manager of the "business/financial" matters of missions, particularly the budget development process and ongoing budgetary oversight.
- Assists Home and World missions in financial and accounting processes by,
- Assisting home mission startups with established processes for setting up EIN, bank accounts, review contracts for lease and rentals, insurance needs
- Assist with MPSA planning
- Assist home mission congregations with CEF processes
- Assists with expense approvals including credit cards within established limits
- Track home and world mission spending to the approved budgets
- Carries out duties in collaboration with and mutual respect for the DMO and mission administrators.
- Assists in the development, improvement and implementation of financial procedures that comply with WELS and Federal and State laws and are consistent with Scriptural principles.
- Serves as advisor and office representative to mission administrative units as assigned.
SUPERVISORY and BUDGETARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists the DMO in managing seven staff members in the Missions Operations Office. Works with DMO to carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with WELS policies, procedures and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training staff; planning assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining staff; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
The Assistant Director of Mission Operations works with the DMO in developing and managing all missions (home, world, joint mission council) budgets. In addition, the position collaborates with other areas of ministry, the Human Resources office, and Financial Services on development of the compensation elements of the synod's mission program.

- Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to interact professionally with internal and external stakeholders.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft programs and understanding of technological possibilities for greater operational effectiveness.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel
- A willingness to pursue additional training and to remain current in the field of knowledge that pertains to this position.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Minimum of ten years of professional experience, with demonstrated expertise in managing business operations. Bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred. Proven exposure to real estate markets and experience with financing structures. Exposure to nonprofit or mission-driven organizations is a plus.
