Job Description:
Reporting to the Associate Provost, the Director of the Writing Center and Oral Communication Center will be responsible for providing leadership in both academic resource centers and teaching in a related field.
Specifically, the Director of the Writing Center and Oral Communication Center will:
  • Hire, train, mentor, supervise, and evaluate all student employees working in both centers, including support, coaching, and consultation as they engage in work delivering services,
  • Implement management and operational practices, including planning, assigning, and evaluating work, and using session feedback and other assessment data to guide improvement, rewarding/disciplining staff as appropriate;
  • Serve as a point of contact for consultations as a subject matter expert on writing and speaking support, as well as academic support for students, facilitating opportunities to address student needs coming from academic departments and the COMPASS: Sweet Success Center;
  • Stay up to date on scholarship and best practices related to writing and oral communication center administration, as well as serve as a campus leader on outreach, collaboration, and assessment efforts;
  • Participate in and guide planning for the centers, and in collaboration with the Associate Provost, determine resource needs and priorities for the department to forecast, prepare and administer the centers' budgets.
  • Develop short- and long-term goals and objectives for the centers and create processes and practices that position the centers to meet these goals.
This is a 10-month administrative position with no more than 16 teaching credits per academic year in a disciplinary area related to the director's expertise, including a two-credit training course in the fall semester for student employees of both centers.


Requirements:
The ideal candidate is/has:
  • A master's degree in Writing, English, Communication, Higher Education, or related field (terminal degree in aforementioned field preferred)
  • Experience with academic support (e.g., peer education, supplemental instruction, academic advising, promotion of study strategies, writing/speaking support or related work)
  • Experience supervising student employees, including hiring and training
  • Experience with assessment and utilizing data to plan, deliver, and evaluate results
  • A strong ability to communicate and cultivate partnerships with various campus entities
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience supporting instructors with writing and/or speaking assignments
  • Experience with developing and managing a budget including personnel expenses
  • Familiarity with online scheduling systems preferred but not required
  • A strong commitment to diversity, equity, and justice
