Job Description:
Wittenberg University is accepting applications for the position of General Maintenance Worker (2nd shift) in Facilities Management. This position is responsible for performing work of varying difficulty related to basic repair and installation in the trades areas and building maintenance on and off campus, including but not limited to campus housing, academic and administrative buildings, rental properties, athletic facilities, etc. This is a full-time, non-exempt position, working approximately 40 hours per week during the hours of 2:30 p.m. to 11:00p.m., Monday through Friday. Full-time employees are eligible for benefits.
Essential functions include, but are not limited to:
  • Inspects buildings for damages and vandalism and makes necessary repairs to structures and equipment including but not limited to painting interior and exterior surfaces, making minor carpentry repairs, making plaster and plumbing repairs and adjusting and maintaining heating and cooling equipment.
  • Provides assistance to skilled crafts persons with work related to more comprehensive projects, primarily aiding the mechanical trades.
  • Repairs including but not limited to window glass, screens, blinds and shades, door hardware and related items such as panic devices, door closers and locks, fencing, bleachers and benches, desks, tables, chairs, cabinets, etc.
  • Installs window treatments, storm doors and windows.
  • Performs minor electrical work with an emphasis on replacing light bulbs; also includes tasks such as replacing outlets, fixtures, and smoke detectors and/or batteries.
  • Performs minor plumbing work such as unclog drains, toilets, sinks and replace plumbing fixtures.
  • Performs minor carpentry work patching walls and floors, painting interior and exterior surfaces, tile and grout work, roofing and ceiling system repairs.
  • Assists with moves including but not limited to furniture, office equipment, materials, etc.
  • Assists with grounds keeping as needed.
  • Performs catch and release duties related to nuisance animal species (must be licensed - can be obtained once employed).
  • Operates and maintains a variety of hand tools and power tools used related to tasks performed.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and minor repairs on campus equipment used.
  • Observes safe work methods and uses appropriate safety equipment; secures worksites from safety hazards as necessary; attends safety meetings and applicable training.
  • Receives and completes work orders and other requests for work.
  • Maintains accurate records of work performed and materials used in applicable record keeping systems used.
  • Participates as an active member of a team.
  • Represents the University with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff, students and visitors and maintains a professional image at all times.
  • Inspects assigned areas and corrects or reports safety hazards as appropriate.
  • Performs other relevant duties as assigned such as special projects, programs, developmental activities, etc.


Requirements:
  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • Vocational education with trade certificate/diploma and completed apprenticeship training hours required.
  • 3-5 years hands-on experience working as residential and commercial general maintenance.
  • Ability and willingness to obtain commercial nuisance wild animal control operator's license.
  • Good knowledge of the methods, practices and techniques of building maintenance; good knowledge of the equipment, tools and materials used in the work; good knowledge of safe work practices; some knowledge of computer system maintenance techniques.
  • Working skill in the use of small tools and equipment; some skill in understanding and following oral and written instructions.
  • Prior experience using work order systems preferred.
  • Must be dependable, punctual, and have a good record of attendance.
  • Must be regularly available to work second shift hours (2:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.).
  • Must be adaptable and flexible with the ability to respond to emergency calls for particular trade and to any other trade or related systems when needed. Ability to work daytime and weekend hours when necessary for emergency or project work related to position.
  • A valid driver's license is required; must meet required insurance qualifications found in Wittenberg Motor Pool policies and procedures. If license is from out of state, successful candidate will need to obtain a valid Ohio driver's license within 30 days of hire date.
Physical demands include: Strength and mobility to work indoors and outdoors, and in an office or shop maintenance setting, including operating hand and power tools; stamina to perform sustained physical labor, including standing, walking, climbing and working in confined or awkward spaces; strength to lift and maneuver materials and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds with proper equipment; vision to read printed materials; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over a radio or phone. Ability to climb stairs and work from ladders and scaffolding. Work is subject to exposure to frequent local travel, extreme weather conditions, and noise.

The rate for this position starts at $18.00 - $21.60 per hour (dependent on experience). As second shift, this position is eligible for a $0.50/hour shift differential.
