Job Description:
The Student Success and Instruction Librarian, an administrative position with non-tenure track faculty status, drives Thomas Library's instruction and outreach efforts in support of the University's commitment to student success. This position applies their expertise in library instruction, outreach, and assessment and actively partners on campus-wide student success initiatives. They develop and deliver innovative, inclusive, and multi-modal approaches to library instruction and programming. They also work closely with COMPASS Student Success, Student Affairs and other campus departments. This is a full-time, exempt-level position reporting to the Director of the Thomas Library.
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
- Deliver course-related and course-integrated information literacy instruction both in person and online.
- Develop and apply to teach a First Year Seminar course each Fall.
- Conduct and assess information literacy sessions for undergraduate and graduate courses.
- Collaborate in the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation of library instructional content, learning materials, and objects.
- Actively engage in selective campus and/or community outreach and engagement programming and events focused on enhancing academic preparedness and fostering student retention.
- Respond to academic-based referrals and early alerts from COMPASS Student Success, offering consultations and workshops, working closely with identified students.
- Deliver general reference assistance through on-call and chat service.
- Serve as library liaison to several academic departments, offering collection development, instruction and reference services to students and faculty in need of subject-specific support.
- Serve and actively contribute to relevant committees, task forces, and working groups at the Library, University, regional, and/or national level.
- Contribute to university efforts regarding student retention, recruitment, and degree completion.
- Compile library instruction statistics for reporting to ACRL.
- Perform other relevant duties as assigned such as special projects, programs, developmental activities, etc.
Requirements:
Requirements include:
- A Master's degree in library science or equivalent (MSLS, MLIS, MALS etc.) from a library school program accredited by the American Library Association or other relevant advanced degree is required by start of appointment.
- Classroom teaching experience, preferably in an academic library setting.
- Demonstrated understanding of principles of information literacy instruction.
- Enthusiasm for creating an inclusive environment for all students and supporting student retention efforts.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Competency and experience using Microsoft Office software, specifically proficient in the use of Excel, Publisher, Outlook, and PowerPoint with the ability and desire to learn additional software applications as necessary.
- Ability to reach for books on shelves, to lift and move books, materials, or equipment, often up to 25-30 pounds.
- Ability to sit at a computer workstation for more than 50% of workday and perform repetitive motions, such as typing or using a computer mouse.
- Evening and weekend work is occasionally required.
