Maintenance Leader - Channel Plant

Position Purpose:

This position is responsible for supervising all aspects of Channel Maintenance organization to achieve cost and efficiency goals. Responsibilities include supervising the work activities of skilled employees, responsible for the maintenance and repair of manufacturing equipment, lines, tools and machinery; will also ensure required tools, equipment and parts are available and in good working order. Will provide Manufacturing with support to meet customer and production requirements; will provide Engineering with project support. Work is performed under the general direction of the Manager, Engineering and includes responsibility for the work performance of other employees.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage & execute the Planned Maintenance/Reliability framework to ensure all maintenance and preventive maintenance activities are thorough and completed in a timely and professional manner; maintains all records of preventive maintenance; identifies solutions to improve equipment uptime and eliminate repetitive problems; continues to build and foster the Maintenance Excellence Program methodology.
  • Develops programs and processes to ensure all tools and equipment are well maintained and to provide continuous capabilities to meet production requirements and customer specifications.
  • Provides leadership to his/her team and manages performance through effective communications and development of employees; practices effective performance management by establishing measurable objectives for all employees; rewards excellence and deals quickly with performance issues. Ensures that all mechanics are properly trained and capable of doing their jobs.
  • Develops capital projects to improve plant performance, replace obsolete equipment and/or reduce costs; installs new production lines and manages projects for new equipment; maintains existing lines; responds promptly to, and completes, all production line maintenance requests.
  • Recommends methods, materials and layouts for improvements and cost reductions based on manufacturing needs and capabilities.
  • Monitors department budget which includes the procurement and storage of all equipment parts; ensures that the department stays within budgeted guidelines, analyzes and explains variances; develops and implements solutions to reduce costs.
  • Provides monthly and other reports as requested
  • Ensures maintenance department goals are met, including project, cost, quality, and safety objectives.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with vendors to obtain quotes and purchase
  • Materials, parts, and supplies; manages inventory including requisition system.
  • Interfaces with Operations, Logistics, and other departments to communicate requirements for equipment downtime, repairs, and changeovers.
  • Participates in the development and execution of Engineering Projects.
  • Lead Safety & Quality Improvement Plans execution.
  • Health & Improvement of Foundational / Base Systems and Processes (CILTs, 5S, Centerline, Breakdown Analysis, work orders – emergency, corrective, preventive).
  • Publish report(s) on key metrics/activities.
  • Manage the Training Plan and train or develop training material – Upskilling Maintenance Techs and Operators.

Qualifications/Experience/Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field with 3 years of production maintenance experience and 5 years of supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Preferred experience with ISO 9000 and lean manufacturing.
  • Demonstrated skills in Planned Maintenance systems & work processes, Breakdown Analysis/problem solving, Spare Parts controls and CMMS.
  • Excellent project management, negotiation, and sourcing skills.
  • Strong organizational, follow-up, and multitasking abilities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to analyze situations and respond promptly, organize and prioritize tasks, and participate in multi-functional teams.
  • Proven capability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and manage lower-level employees.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, and preventative maintenance software.

Work Environment/Physical Demands/Travel:


  • Ability to work in a typical production environment with loud noise levels and moving equipment.
  • Exposure to hazardous chemicals used in blending, packaging, and distribution.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, reach, climb, stoop, talk, see, hear, and use hands/wrists for extended periods.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts to tasks such as frequency distribution, test reliability, and analysis of variance.
  • Ability to apply principles of logic and scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to work near moving machinery and at heights, with limited exposure to fumes, airborne particles, toxic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, vibration, and extreme temperatures.
  • Limited travel (<10%) is required for this role.
