Job Summary
The Automation Technician will report to the Facilities Manager and will be responsible for a wide variety of automation, setup, configuration, and assembly of equipment. This will include projects on new automation requirements, robot and PLC programming, machine connectivity, alarm and discrimination configurations, improvements to existing equipment, general repairs and preventative maintenance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Learn, practice, and adhere to all safety, quality, and department-specific policies as well as GMP/SOP's and prepare and maintain records as required.
- Practice and enforce all Company & Department policies and LOTO procedures.
- Experience maintaining continuous system operation by adjusting, repairing, replacing, or modifying automation/robotic system components.
- Experience troubleshooting electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems and components, and returning to serviceability.
- Understanding of PLCs
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical diagrams including complex automated system drawings.
- Ability to train other technicians and operators on products, processes, and equipment.
- Experience using power tools and measuring equipment.
- Strong awareness of safety
- Manage and oversee changeovers, major and minor adjustments or repairs, assist to trouble shoot and problem solve all plant facilities and/or equipment as necessary.
- Experience maintaining continuous system operation by adjusting, repairing, replacing, or modifying automation/robotic system components.
- Experience troubleshooting electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems and components, and returning to serviceability.
- Use a proactive and predictive approach to develop a continuous improvement, root cause analysis, based culture within the department.
- Coordinate with production team to ensure downed equipment is up and running in an expeditious manner.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Skills & Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of controls and automation system or formal education in degree in engineering, facility management or equivalent work experience preferred.
- Needs to have food and beverage processing, filling and packaging equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and engineering documents and specifications as they apply to manufacturing equipment, facilities and systems.
- Read and understand electrical, mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic diagrams & schematics.
- Formal training in electrical or electronic engineering technology.
- Excellent mechanical aptitude and safety aptitude.
- Excellent trouble-shooting skills.
- Knowledge of VFDs, PLCs, PLC programming on multiple platforms, including RS Logix and Factory Talk View programming.
- Knowledge of servo drives, motor controls, pneumatics, hydraulics, and power distribution.
Physical Demands
- Vision, hearing and speaking to meet performance standard.
- Ability to stand, push, pull, lift, climb, bend, stoop, squat, walk, manual dexterity and large motor skills to work with the following tools: all types of hand tools, power tools, scoops, screens, scales, pallet jacks & drum dollies, mops, brooms, ladders and portable stairs.
- Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis and heavier weights using appropriate equipment and/or team lifting.
Work Environment
- Requires ability to work in an environment that may contain non-toxic fumes, dust, odors, moderate level noise, and temperature & ventilation variations while wearing any appropriate safety and/or protective clean room apparel required i.e.: uniforms, safety glasses, safety shoes, gloves, hair net, beard net, face mask or respirator.
- Work environment sometimes involves exposure to inclement weather.
