WNCSource Teacher Trainee Program is a career advancement training program open to a limited number of participants. It is designed to support the Teacher Trainee as they work to earn the minimum qualification to work in a teaching position with WNCSource.
The Teacher Trainee makes continuous progress toward (1) gaining hands-on experience, (2) mastering best practices, policies and procedures and documentation requirements, and (3) obtaining the required credential, certificate or college credit(s) needed to qualify for permanent positions working in WNCSource classrooms.
Within the first semester after hire, all Teacher Trainees must complete college course EDU 119 Introduction to Early Childhood Education and earn the grade necessary for the course to count as a prerequisite toward other Early Childhood Education courses (which is generally a C or higher). Additionally, depending upon each Teacher Trainee’s long term goals and qualification requirements for permanent positions, Teacher Trainees may be required to (1) successfully complete other courses (earning any grade necessary for the course to count as a prerequisite toward other Early Childhood Education courses) such as those needed to earn Early Childhood Preschool or Infant/Toddler Care certificates, or (2) complete all steps necessary to earn a Childhood Development Associates (“CDA”) credential.
Teacher Trainees are compensated at their hourly pay rate for time completing coursework and studying for college courses, up to a maximum of 1.5 hours per course credit hour per week, when the coursework is done at a pre-approved WNCSource office location. So, for example, a Teacher Trainee can be paid up to 6 hours per week for EDU 119, a four-credit hour course, to study and complete assignments.
After attending orientation, while gaining classroom experience, the Teacher Trainee will provide supplemental support to teachers working with children who have a wide range of cognitive, social, emotional, and physical abilities. The Teacher Trainee assists our teachers in providing high-quality, educational experiences to enhance school readiness that comply with the NC Division of Child Development and Early Education and Head Start Performance Standards and/or NC Pre-K program requirements, as applicable.
Once the Teacher Trainee has received a sufficient amount of classroom training and any needed education hours to qualify and provide high quality care and education to children, they are ready to apply for other positions with WNCSource!
