Family law practice is a unique but very rewarding field which involves helping people solve family problems. As a legal assistant your work will help clients navigate many different emotions - - pain during divorce and child custody battles, fear and shock in situations of domestic violence and happiness when a client is done with the divorce and starting new life.
Helping manage documents and maintaining effective communication with clients are major responsibilities of a family law legal assistants. Family law often involves emotionally charged issues such as child custody, child support and division of assets, thus family law paralegals must have excellent interpersonal communication skills and must be capable of handling clients who may be anxious, upset, or distressed. Legal assistants must also communicate well with other professionals, for example bank personnel, healthcare providers, accountants and other attorneys. Organization is a must, as family law legal assists must sort through documents and be sure that the documents are correctly categorized and sent to the other spouse’s lawyer.
Responsibilities
- Work with clients to collect information
- Review and summarize records
- Type letters and court filings
- Work with attorneys and clients to draft discovery responses
- Draft pleadings, motions, letters and other documents
- File documents with the court
- Perform administrative duties (calendar hearings and deadlines, organize case files, manage logistics etc.)
- Maintain pleadings and discovery tables
- Organize exhibits, documents, evidence, briefs and appendices
- Help attorneys prepare for trial
Skills
- Strong touch typing ability
- Compassion to help clients who are in distress
- Highly organized with ability to juggle multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Strong writing and communication skills along with attention to detail
- Extensive computer expertise (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
- Self-started, able to work independently
- Experience helpful but not necessary
