Environmental Project Engineer

Summary Objective:

The purpose of this position is to provide professional engineering services focused on environmental projects, including planning, managing, and directing engineering initiatives related to water/wastewater systems, environmental sustainability, and infrastructure improvement.

Essential Functions:

• Supervises and evaluates assigned staff, addressing employee concerns, directing work, providing counseling and discipline, and completing performance appraisals.
• Manages the planning and execution of engineering and construction projects, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and client expectations.
• Develops, initiates, and implements design concepts and engineering procedures for water/wastewater treatment systems, with a focus on sustainability and cost efficiency.
• Prepares engineering documents, specifications, agreements, and bid documents for various projects.
• Prepares conceptual engineering designs and plans for wastewater collection, conveyance, and treatment facilities; performs cost estimations for such projects.
• Prepares program/project assessments, progress reports, and special reports as requested.
• Reviews staff reports for accuracy and compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Determines sewage capacity availability and requirements for new developments and catalogs sewer construction drawings.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical or Civil Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Six (6) years of professional engineering experience in municipal public works, with at least three (3) years of experience in water/wastewater treatment, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
• Licensed Florida Professional Engineer.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of Federal, State, County, and local engineering standards, as well as environmental permitting and regulations.
• Proficient in AutoCAD and other engineering design tools for creating detailed plans and drawings.
• Ability to detect errors and make corrections in written correspondence, budget documents, reports, etc.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with employees, City officials, and the general public.
• Ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects efficiently and effectively.
• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

Work Hours:

Monday-Friday, 8 am - 5 pm (May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays to meet the business needs of the City.)

Physical Demands:

Performs primarily office-based work with occasional fieldwork requiring walking or standing and minimal lifting (up to 10 pounds).

Work Environment:

Fieldwork may involve exposure to environmental conditions such as noise, dust, or adverse weather. Proper safety precautions and equipment are provided.
