 Great opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a new fire-based ambulance transport program.


The Town of Wolfeboro Fire-Rescue Department is accepting applications and resumes to fill open positions and create a hiring list for future vacancies in the position of Career Fire Fighter/EMT (full time union position, 48 hours per week).

 

SALARY RANGE

 

Current entry-level pay of $23.18 per hour. Lateral transfer starting pay DOQ.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

 

           High school diploma or State recognized equivalent; NHFST (or Pro-Board) Certified Fire Fighter II; and minimum certification as a National Registry EMT or higher and eligible for licensure in NH (candidate with EMT certification will obtain AEMT certification within one year of hire), have a valid NH CDL Class B license with Air Brakes and Tank Vehicle Endorsements; course completion in advanced fire fighting and rescue techniques, and two-year college level degree in Fire Science or Fire Protection highly desirable.

            Must meet the current State of New Hampshire entry level career fire fighter eligibility requirements, as defined in Part Fire 701, Administrative Rules for NH Fire Standards and Training. Applicants must have a valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) license and/or meet lateral transfer requirements in accordance with Part Fire 703. It is preferred that successful applicants live within 20 minutes of Central Fire Station.

           Interviews to be conducted at the Wolfeboro Public Safety Building, 251 South Main Street, Wolfeboro, NH. Applicants will be notified as to a specific date and time.

Position Purpose:

Performs responsible work related to fire suppression, emergency medical care and transport, fire prevention education, and hazardous materials. Performs all other related work as required. 

 

Essential Functions:

Responds to fire alarms and other emergency or service calls.

Performs firefighting activities including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose and performing fire combat, containment and extinguishment tasks.

Performs emergency rescue and extrication work in burning buildings, as well as at vehicle, drowning and other accidents.

Performs certified emergency aid activities/services at their EMS license level including administering aid and/or CPR to the ill, injured persons or those overcome by fire and smoke. Position responsibilities include ambulance transport of patients.

Performs post fire clean up and salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water and removing debris.

Secures burned buildings against rekindling.

Provides assistance to the public in emergency and non-emergency situations.

Receives radio and telephone calls, obtains specific information and/or refers calls as necessary to proper agency or relays fire calls and alarms. Operates radio and other communication equipment.

Participates in fire drills, attends training programs, department meetings and classes in firefighting, emergency medical care, hazardous materials and related subjects, and maintains required skill levels.

Assists in conducting training programs as assigned.

Performs fire/safety prevention activities by inspecting buildings and other structures for fire hazards; and reviewing plans and maps to ensure that facilities comply with fire codes. Advises owners of changes required or issues compliance orders or warning citations.

Participates in pre-fire planning by inspecting and drawing floor plans of commercial and industrial buildings and institutions.

Performs special assignments such as assisting in developing plans for emergency preparedness, hazardous communications, training programs, firefighting, hazardous materials and emergency aid activities.

Presents programs to the community on safety and fire prevention topics and participates in public relations activities.

Provides general information to the public on laws and ordinances.

Maintains fire equipment, apparatus, facilities and grounds to include, periodically testing hoses and other apparatus and fire protection systems and performing minor repairs. Maintains records of test information. 

Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities and equipment; cleans and washes walls and floors; paints and makes minor repairs; washes, hangs and dries hoses; washes, cleans and polishes, maintains and tests apparatus and equipment.

Assists in writing reports and maintaining records of incidents, training, inspections and the like; performs other administrative duties as assigned.

May be required to respond to fire or other emergencies during non-duty hours.

Adheres to all department rules and regulations.

Conducts fire prevention inspections with basic knowledge of the fire and building codes.

Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates.

 

Recommended Minimum Qualifications:

 

Education, Training and Experience:

High school diploma/GED; Associates Degree in Fire Science preferred; a valid New Hampshire CDL-B with tank and air brake endorsements; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. NHFST (or Pro-Board) Firefighter I and II and a minimum certification as a nationally registered EMT or higher required. EMT certified candidates will be required to obtain AEMT certification within one year of hire.

 

Knowledge, Ability and Skill:

Knowledge: Knowledge of current firefighting principles and techniques; knowledge of the principles and practices of emergency medicine; knowledge and understanding of codes, regulations and instruction manuals; and knowledge of the operations and maintenance of fire department apparatus and equipment.

 

Ability: Ability to make decisions quickly and calmly in emergency situations; ability to work in a team environment; ability to deal with people in a friendly and effective manner; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of assigned staff; ability to prepare and maintain records and reports; ability to instruct, train and demonstrate Firefighter techniques and equipment use.

 

Skill: Skill in operating all Fire and EMS equipment and apparatus. Skilled in the use of all office equipment and all emergency tools, equipment and supplies. Skills in patient care and public relations. Skills in report writing, computer usage, driving, and two-way radio usage. Proficient use of computers and software applications, data entry and fire department software and skill in written and oral communication skills.

 

Physical Requirements:

Minimal physical effort is required to perform administrative duties. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, speak and hear and use hands to operate equipment. Moderate to strenuous physical effort is required when responding to emergencies. May be required to lift/carry equipment or persons weighing more than 100 pounds. May be required to wear protective equipment which weighs up to 50 pounds while climbing a ladder. Vision requirements include the ability to read and analyze documents, make fine visual distinctions, use a computer and operate motor vehicles and other equipment.

 

Supervision:

Supervision Scope: Performs highly responsible duties; makes decisions which involve choices of action within limits defined by standard practices and instructions.

 

Supervision Received: Works under the direct supervision of the Fire Lieutenant and in accordance with the applicable provisions of the New Hampshire State Statutes.

Job Environment:

 

Work is performed primarily in an office environment, in vehicles, and at fire and medical emergencies; firefighting and emergency medical work is performed under variable weather conditions, including temperature extremes. Employee is exposed to the hazards associated with fighting fires and rendering emergency medical assistance including smoke, noxious odors, fumes, chemicals, liquid chemicals, solvents and oils, biohazards, and bodily fluids. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate in office setting, and very loud at an emergency scene.

In the office, operates standard office equipment such as telephone, computer, copier, and fax; when at a fire or emergency operates some or all of the following equipment: hand and power tools, all fire apparatus, emergency medical aid equipment, a radio, and all standard firefighting equipment.

Makes frequent contact with the general public, municipal fire and EMS departments as well as private ambulance services.

Has access to limited department-related confidential information including patient care reports and personal information about citizens.

Errors could endanger public safety, result in damage to property, have legal and/or financial implications, and cause adverse public relations.
