Patient Care Technician
Delivers direct/indirect care to patients of all ages from neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, and adult to geriatric, under the delegation/direction/supervision of a physician, registered nurse, and/or licensed practical nurse. Assists in maintaining a safe, clean environment and performs clerical/administrative functions as assigned. Demonstrates critical thinking/clinical reasoning in decision making to assure the delivery of safe, quality, timely, compassionate, and cost-effective care to the patient populations served by the department(s)/unit(s)/area(s).Effectively communicates and collaborates both intra- and interdepartmentally with patients, families, physicians, administration and other healthcare team members. Documents accurately and in a timely manner. Adheres to organizational policies and procedures; and regulatory/ accrediting body requirements.
MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Make and document observations of patients as directed by an RN and within parameters of education level. 2. Share information gathered from patient observation with RN in a timely manner. 3. Contribute to formulation of patient care plans as directed by RN. 4. Perform and document nursing interventions in accordance with education level and Wood County Hospital standards under the direction of an RN. 5. Document responses to nursing interventions provided. 6. Competent to perform procedures and use equipment required in the care of medical/ surgical/pediatric patients (if completed that portion of nursing education). 7. Competent to care for adult patients and children if completed that portion of nursing education. 8. Recognize and report immediately to RN any changes in a patient's condition such as a code, shock or adverse reaction. 9. Utilize universal precautions when caring for patients and when handling specimens. 10. Deal with ethical issues according to Wood County Hospital protocol. 11. Serve as patient advocate. 12. Know legal aspects and liabilities of nursing practice as a student nurse working as a nursing assistant. 13. Participate in hospital fire, tornado, and disaster drills and know specific role in the care and/or evacuation of patients. 14. Able to identify cost containment measures and charge supplies appropriately. 15. Maintain appropriate supplies. 16. Maintain confidentiality of patients. 17. Use effective communication techniques. 18. Represent hospital to others in positive way. 19. Address patients, families, co-workers, other health care workers appropriately. 20. Direct complaints of patients, physicians, visitors, co-workers and other health care workers through appropriate channels according to Wood County Hospital standards. 21. Responsible for meeting Wood County Hospital standards for scheduled time. 22. Organize daily assignments to meet responsibilities within time constraints of schedule. 23. Adjust personal schedule to meet needs of unit. 24. May transport patient EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE Currently enrolled in an accredited RN nursing/surgical technology program.
