The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) reports directly to the Laboratory Operations Manager under the direction of the Laboratory Admin Director and Laboratory Medical Director. The MLS provides accurate and timely testing of specimens brought into the lab. Duties include but are not limited to competency in: instrumentation, maintenance, current methodology, laboratory practices and laboratory information system.
MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Demonstrates appropriate skills required to work with neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults and geriatrics. 2. Demonstrates the knowledge necessary to operate instruments and/or equipment used for proper job performance. 3. Performs required maintenance on instruments and documents procedures performed following established procedure. 4. Navigates hospital and laboratory information systems to facilitate placing orders and entering results. 5. Follows procedures necessary to troubleshoot instrument problems. Documents the occurrence, procedures and outcome of troubleshooting actions following established procedure. 6. Uses practical and theoretical knowledge to investigate specimen and result problems. Provides problem-solving assistance to technicians, phlebotomists, and other support staff. 7. Performs laboratory test ordering, specimen accessioning, specimen handling, specimen processing, test performance, and test result reporting following established procedures with minimal errors. 8. Properly handles delta flags, critical results, and unacceptable specimens by following standard operating procedures. 9. Verifies patient identity according to hospital and department policy before performing any procedure. 10. Participates in Quality Control (QC) review, QI reporting, College of American Pathologists and Joint Commission accreditation preparation, policy and procedure review, and department improvement. 11. Consistently coordinates/prioritizes work to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency with minimal supervision completing work assignments in an organized and accurate manner. 12. Serves as a resource and role model for technicians, students, new employees, support staff, and other professionals. May be asked to serve in an In-Charge role. 13. Teaches/oversees MLS students during their clinical rotations. 14. Assumes personal responsibility for professional development and education. 15. Performs additional professional duties assigned by Admin Director, Ops Manager, and/or Section Supervisor. Education, Training and Experience • Must possess education and training that enable employee to perform high complexity testing as defined by CLIA ’88. • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent hours in a biological, chemical, or physical science required. • Current certification or eligible as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP) or grandfathered as a registered Medical Technologist preferred.
