Delivers direct/indirect care to patients of all ages from neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, and adult to geriatric, under the delegation/direction/supervision of a physician, registered nurse, and/or licensed practical nurse. Education and Work Experience • High school diploma or equivalent. • Current STNA (State Tested Nurse Aide) certification preferred. Under the delegation/direction/supervision of the physician, registered nurse, and/or licensed practical nurse and within the scope of practice, provides/assists with and accurately documents patient monitoring, which includes but is not limited to: • Obtaining patient’s blood glucose per capillary finger-stick as ordered and notifying RN of results. • Observing and recording the patient’s intake and output, and/or calorie count; and notifying the RN of any deviations from the usual. • Obtaining accurate blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate, temperature, and SaO2 and notifying the RN of abnormal vital signs immediately. • Obtaining patient’s height and/or weight. • Performing Point of Care (POC) testing (e.g. urine pregnancy testing, urine dip testing) and notifying the RN of results. • Performing electrocardiogram (EKG/ECG) testing and submitting for physician review. • Responding to and silencing peripheral IV and bed/chair alarms and notifying the RN immediately. • Discontinuing peripheral IVs. • Applying and/or removing non-sterile dressings and compresses and reporting abnormal findings to the RN. • Performing hourly purposeful rounding in collaboration with the RN. • Serving as a safety companion. Under the delegation/direction/supervision of the physician, registered nurse, and/or licensed practical nurse and within the scope of practice, provides/assists with and accurately documents processes/preparations for patient care which include but are not limited to: • Admitting patients (e.g. placing and orienting to room, obtaining vital signs, placing monitoring leads, providing call light, directing family members to appropriate waiting areas). • Gathering supplies and equipment in preparation for various diagnostic or treatment procedures (e.g. pelvic exams, suturing) performed by physicians and nurses; remaining with the patient to provide emotional support when requested. • Changing bed linen and straightening/organizing/tidying the patient’s room throughout shift; providing extra linens, blankets, as needed; safeguarding personal items. • Answering call lights promptly and assisting/following up on patient needs. • Transporting patients. Patients who require cardiac monitoring must also be accompanied by an ACLS trained staff member. • Transporting patients to/caring for patients in the morgue, as requested. • Directing patient’s visitors and family as appropriate. • Delivering specimens to the Laboratory. • Transporting blood and blood products from the Laboratory. • Supporting incoming/outgoing air transport (helipad duties). • Performing between-patient cleaning of designated room, including removal of trash to appropriate receptacles, and cleaning horizontal surfaces and high-touch surfaces and/or mopping the floor with approved disinfectant. • Stocking/restocking patient refreshments and nourishment in refrigerator. • Stocking/Restocking patient care/unit supplies as directed.
