POSITION: Deputy ASSIGNMENT: Road


PURPOSE OF POSITION
The purpose of this position is to perform law enforcement work in providing protection of life and property; enforcement of Federal, State, and local laws; response to emergency situations; and investigation of criminal activity.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
In addition to consistent and reliable attendance, the following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Patrols designated areas to detect and deter criminal activity and traffic violations; inspects doors, windows, and premises of residential/commercial buildings/properties to ensure security or to detect suspicious conditions; responds to active alarms at residences, businesses, and industries; maintains high visibility in the community.

Responds to calls relayed by dispatchers, including domestic disputes, abuse, assaults, burglaries, thefts, fatalities, traffic accidents, property damage, alarms, bomb threats, lost or missing persons searches, rescue operations, unattended deaths, public service duties, stranded motorists, or dangerous drivers.

Prevents/discovers commission of crime; writes citations; pursues fleeing suspects; apprehends, arrests and processes criminals, fugitives and offenders as appropriate; assists in booking inmates into jail; transports arrestees, prisoners, members of the general public, or other individuals as required.

Provides assistance and backup support to other officers as necessary; provides emergency response on a twenty-four hour basis as needed; provides assistance to other law enforcement or public service agencies as appropriate.

Enforces all applicable codes, ordinances, laws and regulations (both traffic and criminal) in order to protect life and property, prevent crime, and promote security.

Inspects and maintains assigned police vehicle, uniform, weapons, and equipment; follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.

Receives, reviews, completes, processes, forwards and/or retains various forms and reports as appropriate.

Performs research functions as needed; researches criminal histories and location of individuals via computer.

Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information and assistance; responds to requests for service or assistance; communicates effectively and coherently over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications.

Attends meetings, training sessions and seminars as required; maintains professional affiliations.

Operates a variety of standard and specialized machinery, equipment, and tools associated with law enforcement, which may include a police vehicle, standard/emergency vehicles, firearms, chemical weapons, emergency equipment, radar/laser equipment, radio/communications equipment, computers, alcohol testing equipment, drug testing kits, processing kits, handcuffs, baton, flashlight, metal detector, measuring devices, camera, video camera, video cassette recorder, tape recorder, television, overhead projector, or other equipment.

Communicates with supervisors, officers, employees, other departments, dispatchers, law enforcement agencies, fire personnel, emergency/medical personnel, court officials, attorneys, victims, complainants, prisoners, suspects, the media, the public, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed to obtain information, coordinate activities, review status of work, exchange information, resolve problems, or give/receive advice/direction.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

Performs other related tasks as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or GED; supplemented by completion of basic police officer training program; Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license. Must have successfully completed required courses and certification; may be required to possess additional certification(s) as deemed necessary by the County.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate and control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and/or rapid adjustments.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information.
Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.
Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of influence systems, such as motivation, incentive, and leadership, and to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to resolve problems.
Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in critical and/or unexpected situations involving moderate risk to the organization.
Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds); may occasionally involves dealing with heavier weight (over 100 pounds).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, taste, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, smoke, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, fire, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, explosives, firearms, water hazards, violence, disease, pathogenic substances, or rude/irate customers.
