Scope of Work
Group Fitness Instructor – Class Offerings Vary:
Under the supervision of the Recreation Supervisor, the Fitness Instructor is responsible for leading fitness programs that promote wellness and healthy lifestyles for the community in an atmosphere of enjoyment, fun and inclusiveness for all members of the community.
Rate of pay:
$25.00 - $27.00 per hour to start depending on qualifications
Hours
The hours will vary with classes offered and could be a combination of days, evenings, and/or weekends. Hours may have some flexibility for each individual instructor and type of class offered. Hours could vary by one class per week, to leading up to multiple classes per week, subject to growing demand. Current demands are for 1 – 2 classes per week and could be scheduled around the selected Instructor’s current schedule to maximize availability. Fitness Instructor will act as a substitute in situations where class coverage is needed
Work Location
Most work will be located at the Recreation Complex (111 E Foster Ave). At times, work may require the individual to be perform their job at other Park District sites including the “The Beach" Water Park, Salt Creek Golf Club, The Woodlands at White Oaks Park, and all other park sites throughout the Park District. All sties are within 1-2 miles from the Recreation Complex.
Contact with others
Position involves regular internal contact and contact with class participants.
Reports to the Recreation Supervisor.
Essential Job Functions
- Conducts and leads fun, effective, and safe group fitness classes, which includes proper warm-up, workout, and cool-down.
- Arrives early to class to set up, to ensure equipment is safe and to be prepared to deliver a successful class.
- Instructs on the proper use of all equipment and demonstrates specific exercises and exercise routines.
- Maintains working order of equipment provided, upholds supply inventory, and reports any issues or need for supply replenishment to immediate supervisor.
- Ensures all equipment is put away properly and in an orderly fashion.
- Makes self-available before or after class to respond to participants’ questions or concerns.
- Modifies exercises to ensure a safe and effective class.
- Adapts class elements to match the abilities of students in a safe and appropriate manner.
- Becomes familiar with participants and strives to create a community feel in class.
- Stays informed of the latest fitness and exercise trends
- Performs the job safely and in compliance with Park District safety rules and procedures.
- Attends work on a regular basis
- Communicates any program/patron concerns, questions, or changes to the Recreation Supervisor as soon as possible.
- Records attendance for each class meeting.
- Demonstrates and supports the Park District's Mission, Vision, and Values.
- Attends staff meetings and trainings as requested.
- Performs other duties and functions as directed.
- Gain knowledge and understanding of Park District policies and procedures and see that they are adhered to at all times.
- Adhere to scheduled hours.
- Comply with the District’s Dress Code by coming to work in clean and presentable clothing.
- Upon leaving, ensure room is clean, equipment is put away and lights are turned off.
- Communicate any accidents, safety concerns, maintenance issues, parent complaints, etc. directly to Recreation Supervisor and in proper documentation.
- Demonstrate and support park district customer service standards.
- Assists the Recreation Supervisor in promoting exercise classes and the overall fitness program.
- Administers first aid and CPR and uses an AED, as needed.
- Serves as resource and liaison to Park District employees, departments, government units & community
Qualifications
Requirements of Work
- 18 years of age or older.
- Valid Group Fitness Instructor (CFI) certification/specialization from a nationally recognized organization.
- First Aid, CPR/AED certification required within three months of hire.
- Prior experience leading group fitness classes is highly desired.
- Training and conditioning experience is highly desired.
- Requires flexibility of work schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Knowledge of
- Current trends and protocols of fitness classes
- Strong guest relations and customer service skills.
- Appropriate music to play during warmups, cool downs, and class
Ability to:
- Demonstrate proper exercise techniques, adjusting for diverse populations of participants.
- Train, motivate and encourage participants throughout the class.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with elected officials, supervisors, coworkers, and the public.
- Lead and instruct group fitness classes independently.
- Make correct and safe judgements under both normal and highly stressful situations and circumstances.
- Demonstrating a sincere willingness to help.
- Time management skills.

- Requires strenuous physical activity, including but not limited to walking, running, lifting, climbing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, bending, sitting, and prolonged standing.
- Lifting and carrying heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- General work areas outdoors with frequent exposure to natural and potentially extreme weather conditions.
- Work is subject to inside/outside environmental conditions. Most activities are performed indoors where the conditions include heat, cold and noise from large groups and/or amplified music
Benefits
This is a part time position and not eligible for health insurance nor IMRF. There are some recreational benefits included such as fitness studio or pool use.
