The Safety and Training Specialist leads the safety and employee training programs at Wood’s Powr-Grip. This role is responsible for continued development and implementation of safety and employee training throughout the company, ensuring continuous regulatory compliance, and maintaining an engaged workplace culture.
This position reports directly to the LEAN Process Engineer. This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
The position of Safety and Training Specialist requires the following minimum qualifications:
- EDUCATION: Bachelors or Associates Degree in Occupational Safety/Health or related field preferred.
- LICENSING/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION: Driver’s License. Forklift experience preferred.
- EXPERIENCE: At least 2 years of experience in an industrial safety and/or training related position preferred.
- Experience and proficiency in various computer programs, including but not limited to Microsoft programs and Manufacturing/Industrial ERP software.
- SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES: Knowledge in the following areas:
- Safety statutes, regulations and procedures applicable to a manufacturing operation (OSHA, EPA, etc.).
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing effectively to the extent required by the position.
- Ability to effectively and cooperatively work with other people both in and outside the company.
- Strong ability to multi-task with accuracy, and function in a fast-paced environment with unexpected requests and changing priorities.
- Familiarity with production facilities, machinery, and tools- to the extent of being able to understand and implement safety and training practices.
- Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing principles preferred.
- PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to meet the working conditions and physical demands identified below.
- MENTAL: The ability to read, write and think critically.
- BODY SENSES: All - Ability to use of all body senses.
- MATHEMATICS: Add, Subtract, Multiply, Divide, Statistics, Percentages, and Ratios to the extent required by the position.

The position of Safety and Training Specialist includes all authority necessary to conduct and manage the daily activities required within the Safety and Training Specialist function. This authority is given by the LEAN Process Engineer. This includes authority to direct or perform all activities which are within the Safety and Training Specialist’s defined span of control, and which are necessary to administer the company’s safety and training policies and procedures. All such activities are to be carried out within the bound of established policies and procedures.
This position has the following essential functions and responsibilities:
- Identify company safety training needs and develop and conduct safety training programs.
- Prepare and maintain written safety policies and programs.
- Develop annual company safety goals.
- Work closely with production staff to conduct process hazard analyses, operator training, and implement controls to minimize safety and occupational health hazards.
- Assist and advise on personal protective equipment selection and usage enforcement.
- Maintain corporate safety documents, including but not limited to: training resources and documentation, and Safety Data Sheets.
- Serve as head of WPG Safety Committee- therefore responsible for committee member selection, and scheduling and conducting safety committee meetings.
- Continuously review and be pro-active in all aspects of safety and occupational health.
- Understand federal, state and local occupational safety and health regulations and monitor regulatory changes as they occur. Provide support and leadership to ensure there is no lapse or disregard in compliance with applicable safety and occupational health regulations company-wide.
- Audit safety practices and procedures regularly to ensure continuous compliance- for both internal policies and external regulations.
- Monitor lost-time injuries/illnesses and worker’s compensation claims.
- Review injury/illness and non-injury reports (near-misses) and follow-up as necessary.
- Respond to emergency safety and/or health situations.
- Coordinate appropriate disposal of hazardous waste.
- Gain knowledge of company-wide work situations requiring training and formulate teaching outlines, materials and instructional methods for those situations.
- Collaborate with department heads and supervisors to develop training methods, materials, policies and procedures for each department.
- Coordinate training schedules for all training demands of new employees and on-going/refresher training needs.
- Conduct training sessions.
- Develop methods and test trainees to measure progress and evaluate effectiveness of training.
- Maintain trainee records.
- Initiates paperwork, in accordance with the appropriate quality procedure, for any corrective action that is required. Verifying the implementation of corrective actions that have been assigned to you or affect a process that is under your control.
- Demonstrate consistently good attendance and reliability.
- Exercise effective planning and time utilization, using all available work time in a manner which will benefit the organization and contribute to the smooth operation of the business.
- Exercise sound judgment and decision making (a reasonable approach). Good judgment/decision making shall be construed to mean: evaluating the seriousness of a problem and the amount of time required to correct the problem. Such judgment/decision making shall also include the ability to determine when problems require being brought to the attention of others.

- Maintains an orderly and efficient working area at all times and provide access only to designated personnel approved by LEAN Process Engineer, or Executive Management.
- Maintain a physical appearance which is reasonable, suitable and generally acceptable for the position and within the overall working environment.
- Abide by all company policies and procedures.
- Fulfill the essential responsibilities and duties identified above. Fulfills any additional responsibilities, functions and tasks assigned by the supervisor.
In general, the working conditions are as follows:
- Production floor and office environments. Frequent exposure to noise, heat, fumes, and dust. Occasional exposure to hazardous chemicals.
- Normal full-time working hours for your position will be specifically assigned by your supervisor but generally are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday. Each such shift normally has:
- One (1) hour off for lunch
- Morning Break: 20 minutes
- Afternoon Break: 20 minutes
- Breaks are not guaranteed. They are provided at management's discretion and may be rescinded at any time without notice. Breaks represent "opportunities" to break from your work. These opportunities are "not" available for use if any one of the following two conditions exist:

The position requires the following:
- Must be able to work in the environment identified above.
- Must be able to walk, sit, stand, bend, reach, and carry throughout the shifts described above.
- Must be able to occasionally lift 30 to 50 lbs. from a floor or table position to chest high using a proper lifting technique and repetitively use arms, hands, and fingers in the manipulation of parts.
- Must demonstrate good hand/eye coordination and demonstrate good manual dexterity.
- Must be able to stand for the length of the shift described above.
