What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Camp Counselor position at Woodland Adventures Outdoor Education?
We are seeking enthusiastic and responsible Forest Camp Counselors to create memorable outdoor experiences for children ages 3-12. As a Forest Camp Counselor, you will guide campers through nature-based activities, foster their appreciation for the natural world, and ensure their safety in a woodland environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise groups of 8-12 campers throughout daily camp activities
- Plan and implement forest-centered programs including hiking, wildlife observation, plant identification, and outdoor skills
- Teach environmental stewardship and conservation principles through hands-on activities
- Ensure camper safety during all outdoor activities and monitor changing weather conditions
- Respond appropriately to emergencies according to camp protocols
- Build positive relationships with campers and create an inclusive environment
- Collaborate with fellow counselors and camp staff on program development
- Maintain camping equipment and natural program areas
- Document and report camper progress and behavior issues to camp leadership
Qualifications
- Experience working with children in outdoor educational settings
- Knowledge of forest ecosystems, wildlife, and outdoor skills
- First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain before camp begins)
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
- Problem-solving abilities and good judgment in nature settings
- Background in environmental education, recreation, or related field preferred
- Must be at least a high school graduate; college coursework in environmental science, education, or recreation is a plus
Physical Requirements
- Ability to hike 3-5 miles daily on varied terrain
- Capacity to lift up to 40 pounds
- Stamina to participate in active games and activities
- Comfort working in outdoor settings with natural elements (insects, plants, weather)
Employment Details
- Seasonal position (two weeks in June)
- Staff training provided prior to camp season
