Job Description
Under the supervision of the Aquatics Manager the Head Lifeguard is responsible for supervising and participating in the safety of the daily operations of the Woodland Aquatic Center. The Head Lifeguard in coordination of the Assistant Aquatic Manager will provide leadership to the aquatic staff as needed. This position may work a varying work schedule to include early mornings evenings weekend shifts and holidays.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform preventative maintenance tasks of the pools; equipment and surrounding areas. Report any concerns/issues to Aquatic Manager.
- Assist in the day to day management of the facility operations and pool maintenance.
- Check pool chemicals; record and perform safety checks on equipment and play features throughout daily shift and report any issues to Aquatics Manager.
- Assist with the front desk operations as needed; knowledge of POS; answer facility questions; sales; tours; cash handling.
- Responsible for opening and /or closing aquatic center and ensuring that the facility is properly secured.
- Assist in leading staff in-service trainings; staff schedules; and programming needs.
- Ability to assume duties as Lifeguard and Swim Instructor as deemed by the Assistant Aquatic Manager to prevent accidents by enforcing the safety rules; policies and regulations.
- Ensures staff and patrons adhere to operating policies and procedures of the aquatic facility.
- Assist with keeping accurate records of aquatic facilities usage; accidents and chemical reports.
- Provide positive customer service by responding in a positive manner and report concerns to supervisor as soon as possible.
- Perform monthly inventory on chemicals; first aid supplies; retail; janitorial supplies and office supplies - report to Aquatic Manager.
- Assist the Assistant Aquatic Manager with staff scheduling; groups and facility attendance tracking.
- Recognize and respond to emergencies in and around the Aquatic Facility by reacting quickly and calmly. Perform necessary first aid and ensure reports are completed accurately.
- Responsible for hosting birthday parties; greet and welcome; assign guard to actively participate with party participants and be available for questions; concerns.
- Assist Woodland Park High School and club teams with hosting meets by being available to set up / tear down and trouble shoot as needed.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Be on call for emergencies; facility/rental issues; act as a back-up for Assistant Manager and Aquatic Manager.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the direct supervision of the Aquatics Manager.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Assists with the overall supervision of Aquatic Facility.
Education and Experience
- Possession of current certifications: American Red Cross Lifeguard; First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.
- Must be at least 17 years old
- Previous experience of lifeguarding; pool maintenance and swim instruction or any combination of the above.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience managing a pool with at least 6 months of supervisory experience.
- AFO / CPO preferred or able to obtain within 6 months of hire.
- Water Safety Instructor preferred or able to obtain within 6 months of hire.
- Lifeguard Instructor preferred or able to obtain within 6 months of hire.
Necessary Knowledge; Skills and Abilities
- Ability to verbally and effectively communicate with City staff; general public and outside vendors.
- Ability to multiple task and handle stressful situations.
- Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
- Ability to accurately record and maintain records relating to inspection and maintenance activities.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships.
- Ability to provide Water Safety and Lifeguard training to personnel and general public as required.
- Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule.
- Ability to meet the Physical Demands and willingness to function in the work environment as listed.
- Skill in the operation of listed tools and equipment.
Tools and Equipment
Personal computer; motor vehicle; telephone; copy machine; fax machine; printer; calculator; pool filters and pumps.
Physical Demands
Must be able to push; pull or balance. Upper body strength is a requisite to lift/move a maximum of 50 pounds unassisted and lift/move 200 pounds with assistance. Vision requirements include: near acuity; far acuity; and depth perception and color vision. Requires sense of smell and touch. Hearing must be adequate to hear patrons/co-workers communication up to 25 yards away. Must be able to frequently sit; stand; walk; climb; bend; kneel; stoop; reach and lift; exhibit manual dexterity and the ability to handle objects. Requires the ability to communicate verbally with both children and adults. The ability to talk and hear via the telephone; e-mail; and through face-to-face communication is needed.
Work Environment
The work environment is in and around water and slippery surfaces with exposure to noise; fumes and hazardous chemicals. While performing the duties of this job; the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts. The employee occasionally works in high; precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and humid conditions; fumes or airborne particles; and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the environment is often noisy and loud.
