ONGOING POSTING

SUMMARY

Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance work and operates a variety of equipment in support of the operation repair maintenance and replacement of City water distribution and sewage collection facilities and systems sewer street and storm drainage.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Cleans and televises sanitary sewers and repairs manholes.
  • Flushes and repairs water mains.
  • Exercises; repairs and replaces water valves.
  • Flushes; repairs; replaces and adds fire hydrants.
  • Installs; tests and replaces water meters and water meter remotes.
  • Taps water and sewer mains for service lines.
  • Operates equipment and performs required labor for streets/drainage construction; repair; maintenance; and snow removal activities including grading gravel streets; installing and cleaning culverts; snowplowing and sanding; digging and backfilling graves; installing rock drop structures and rip rap channels; installing erosion control fabric; sweeping asphalt streets; fixing potholes and cracks in asphalt; installing major asphalt patches; ditching; striping and installing street signs.
  • Drives trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading; hauling and unloading of various equipment; parts and materials.
  • Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans and checks tools and equipment after use.
  • Responds to emergency situations as they arise within the City and on specific City projects.
  • Receives training on equipment operations and safety procedures. Assists in training lower level employees to increase their skills.
  • Assists in contacting residents and business owners where services will be interrupted and explains when services will be shut off and how soon it will be turned back on.
  • Maintains a variety of records relating to inspections and maintenance activities.
  • Review as built; plats; and determine approximate lot lines and utility locations within right of way.
  • Removes dead animals
  • Surveys; trims and removes trees and shrubs as needed.
  • Assists with special projects as needed.
  • Must abide all safety regulations and the personal policy manual.
  • Perform on-call duties with the ability to respond to emergency call out within 45 minutes.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides assistance to other departments as necessary to facilitate completion of projects.
  • Provides required signage in coordination with the Police Department before and during special events.
  • Participates in various employee committees as needed or directed.
  • Attends workshops; seminars; and schools as applicable.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Operator I

  • High School graduate or GED.
  • Experience in similar field services operations; water and sewer main installation; streets or repair or operation of construction equipment.
  • Colorado Class B CDL Driver’s License with tanker endorsement and good driving record.
  • Wastewater Collections 1 and Water Distribution 1 certifications or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
Good driving record.

Operator II

  • High School graduate or GED.
  • Two to three years’ experience in similar; street maintenance field services operations; water and sewer main installation; or repair or operation of construction equipment.
  • Colorado Class B CDL Driver License with tanker endorsement and good driving record.
  • Water Distribution II certifications and Wastewater Collections II certification, preferred.

Operator III

  • High School graduate or GED.
  • Three to Five years’ experience in similar field services operations; water and sewer main installation; or repair or operation of construction equipment.
  • Water Distribution III certifications and Wastewater Collections III certification, preferred.
  • Colorado Class B CDL Driver License with tanker endorsement and good driving record.

Operator I – Grade 8 – $24.23 per hour -$29.68 per hour

Operator II – Grade 9 –$26.89 per hour - $32.95 per hour

Operator III – Grade 10 –$29.26 per hour - $36.57 per hour

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
  • Knowledge of road construction and maintenance; drainage systems; and water/wastewater mains.
  • Ability to safely and effectively operate heavy equipment including backhoe; excavator; dump truck; front end loader; sewer jet/vac truck; and snow plow.
  • Ability to safely and efficiently operate small equipment including line and metal locators; confined space retrieval devices; confined space atmospheric testing devices; demo saw; tapping machines; compactors; jack hammer; compressors and shop vacuum.
  • Must have working knowledge of M.U.T.C.D Standards
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally with the general public; developers; and City staff.
  • Writing skills to complete records relating to inspection and maintenance activities.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships.
  • Willingness and ability to train personnel to operate equipment safely and properly.
  • Ability to respond to call-outs within 45 minutes and 24-hour/day availability.
  • Ability to be on call when scheduled.
  • Ability to meet the Physical Demands and willingness to function in the work environment as listed.
  • Skill in the operation of listed tools and equipment.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Personal computer; telephone, mobile radio, copy machine, printer, calculator, common hand and power tools, chain saw, demo saw, and motorized vehicles and equipment including pickup truck, dump/plow truck, loader, generator, backhoe, sewer jet truck, excavator, water truck, street sweeper, compressor, welder, confined space retrieval system, leak locator, tapping machines, portable pumps, line and metal locators, various equipment with snow plow attachments, compactors, crack sealant machine, sewer camera equipment and other equipment as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job; the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, hear, stoop, bend, stand and walk, use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, lift and/or move up to 75 lbs. The employee is periodically required to climb or balance, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is required to periodically climb down into manholes and other confined spaces, into excavations and onto tanks, trucks and heavy equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate construction/maintenance equipment and tools.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed mostly in outdoor environments where the employee could be exposed to wet, cold, snowy, and/or humid conditions, heat and/or sun, and/or airborne particles. Some work at construction sites and under emergency situations is required where the employee could be exposed to toxic or hazardous chemicals and/or fumes, high voltage electricity, moving mechanical parts, vibration, biological hazards, confined spaces, high and precarious places, and water/drowning hazards. Some indoor shop/office work is required to complete minor routine maintenance and cleaning. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate in the shop and field, and potentially high at construction sites and while operating certain equipment.
