Job Description
The Fitness Instructor will communicate effectively and provide fitness leadership to all participants in a positive and professional manner while maintaining a safe environment in and around the pool area.Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Be prompt for assigned class and be available for customer consultations.
- Lead and instruct a diverse fitness population.
- Demonstrate effective verbal and non-verbal communication.
- Knowledgeable and capable to teach a variety of fitness programs; (i.e. high impact; deep water; low impact; arthritis; etc.)
- Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the anatomy of the body and the physiological responses.
- Knowledgeable of the properties of water.
- Ability to provide modifications to exercises.
- Ability to demonstrate and teach in the water and from the deck.
- Communicate at participant’s level; organize class; use teaching resources; motivates students for a positive learning environment.
- Know and enforce all pool rules and regulations of the Woodland Aquatic Center in a firm; but polite manner.
- Maintain safety; discipline; and constant surveillance of classes in and around the pool area.
- Know procedures for first aid and emergencies; including necessary paperwork and administer first aid when appropriate following appropriate Emergency Action Procedure (EAP).
- Ensure all rescue equipment is in working order.
- Wear appropriate uniform and maintain professional appearance.
- Report to supervisor any course registration; behavioral/discipline problems.
- Maintains progress records of each participant enrolled in class and keeps accurate attendance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
May teach swim lessons as an additional duty.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the direct supervision of the Assistant Aquatics Manager and/or Aquatics Manager.

Education and Experience
- Water Safety Instructor Certification preferred (ARC preferred but will accept YMCA; Starfish and Ellis and Associates) preferred.
- American Red Cross Lifeguard Training or Basic Water Rescue preferred.
- CPR/First Aid required or obtained within 60 days of hire.
- Water Fitness Certification (AEA; AAAI; YMCA; etc.) preferred or ability to obtain within one year of hire.
Knowledge; Skills and Abilities
- Ability to verbally and effectively communicate with City staff and general public.
- Ability to multiple task and handle stressful situations.
- Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships.
- Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule.
- Ability to meet the physical demands and willingness to function in the work environment as listed.
Tools and Equipment
Personal computer; telephone; copy machine; printer; calculator. Knowledge of how to safely and properly use various fitness equipment such as noodles; hand buoys; etc.
Physical Demands
All Fitness Instructors must remain alert and be able to easily move through all program areas and effectively communicate and interact with customers throughout shift. Fitness Instructors must be able to stand; sit; walk; reach with arms and hands; climb; balance and kneel for periods of time. While functioning as a Fitness Instructor; the employee may be in the water for long periods of times.
Work Environment
The work environment is in and around water and slippery surfaces with exposure to noise; fumes and hazardous chemicals. While performing the duties of this job; the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts. The employee occasionally works in high; precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and humid conditions; fumes or airborne particles; and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the environment is often noisy and loud.
