SUMMARY
Assists Chief Plant Operator performing all duties necessary to maintain and operate the water treatment facilities pump stations wells tanks and PRV’s.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Daily monitoring of system and facility equipment; and gathering and compilation of daily data.
- Daily lab analytical’ s to evaluate and trend plant performance.
- Periodic maintenance of filters, pumps, chemical feed pumps, on-line analyzers (pH, chlorine, turbidity), gauges, valves, and other equipment and controls.
- Responsible for EPA/State compliance testing requirements including bacteriological, lead & copper, nitrates nitrites, inorganic chemicals, synthetic organic chemicals, volatile organic chemicals, radionuclides, microscopic particulate analysis, and total trihalomethanes.
- Daily monitoring of distribution system water quality.
- Responsible for monitoring pump stations and PRV’s.
- Responsible for monitoring and maintenance of water storage tanks.
- Responsible for follow-up to customer complaints; and customer interaction and education while in the field.
- Write and contribute to plant standard operating procedures (SOP’s).
- Active participant in reservoir management; including; physical reservoir level readings, monitoring of dam piezometers, monitoring of toe drain seepage weirs and decisions made on operation of Homestake pumps to maintain or change reservoir levels.
- Participate in augmentation accounting and water source management.
- Twenty-four (24) hour on-call duty for up to seven consecutive days; as required. This duty requires a 40 minute response time to system alarms and requires autonomous operation of the water plant and other water facilities. The operator must have the ability to assess situations and make appropriate operational decisions.
- Perform calibrations on lab and monitoring equipment to meet CDPHE and EPA Drinking Water Standards.
- Maintain records on lab analytics, filter maintenance, equipment maintenance and calibration, remote pump stations, daily meter readings, tank maintenance, etc.
- Prepare monthly Chlorine/Turbidity reports for State.
- Monitor and record well depths of operational and monitoring wells.
- General maintenance of plant and yard.
- Participate in design, modification, and implementation of computer or PLC programs used in SCADA system.
- Work closely with controls technicians providing assistance with complex control systems projects and repairs.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITES
- Attend workshops, seminars and schools as applicable.
- Serve on various employee or other committees as assigned.
- Other related duties as assigned
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works directly under the Chief Water Treatment Operator and under the general supervision of the Utilities Director.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
This is generally an autonomous position requiring a self-motivated and organized individual. Occasional supervision over subordinate operators or maintenance personnel may be exercised.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent. College or related technical training desired.
- Two years of experience in a water utility; or
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Working knowledge of equipment; facilities; materials; methods; and lab procedures used in water treatment plant maintenance and operation activities.
- Ability to work safely.
- Ability to perform process control calculations and communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to learn spreadsheet design and implementation.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments; and the public.
- Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
- Ability to analyze test results and observations to identify possible problems or need for operational changes.
- Ability to perform mechanical and minor electrical repairs.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Valid Colorado driver’s license
- Certification as a CDPHE Water Treatment Plant Operator D – A or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
- Certification as a Distribution Operator Class 1-4 or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
Motor vehicle, generators, pumps, gauges, hand and power tools, shovels, phones, computers, and a variety of lab equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this position; the employee may be required to work in outdoor conditions. Work is performed near moving mechanical parts, and may be performed in high, precarious places. The employee may be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, risk of electric shock, and toxic or caustic chemicals. The work environment is usually moderately loud.
