Job Summary:  T
o assist the superintendent toward the accomplishment of the mission of the Woodland Public Schools to assure that within a nurturing and stimulating environment each of our diverse students and graduates achieve literacy and appropriate core competencies and becomes a responsible and compassionate citizen. Keeps the district's school buildings in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problems or interruptions to the educational program. Work is performed under the direction of the Facilities and Safety Director.

Qualifications:
  • 18 years or older
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Working knowledge of custodial practices  
  • Ability to work around children and present a positive role model
  • Ability to effectively communicate with students, staff and visitors to the district 
  • Previous experience in building and cleaning maintenance preferred
  • Previous experience with hand tools and power equipment, including brooms, mops, floor cleaning and waxing machines, vacuum cleaners, snow blowers, shovels, power mower and hand tools preferred
  • One year of job related experience working with students in an educational setting preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to follow oral or written work orders from supervisors, and to coordinate work with others
  • Ability to describe orally or in writing cleaning, maintenance or repair problems as needed
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure pertinent to the job
  • Ability to work in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow
  • Ability to work above ground from ladders and automatic lifts
Other Requirements:              
  • Ability to lift up to 60 pounds assisted
  • Ability to climb ladders
  • Ability to cooperate with people of all ages
  • Regular attendance to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position to achieve goals  
  • Assists parents and other visitors to school buildings with special events and programs
Such alternatives to the above requirements and desirable qualifications may be made as the district finds appropriate.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Sweeping and Cleaning Classrooms and/or Gymnasiums
  • Cleaning Restrooms
  • Emptying Trash
  • Minor Maintenance
  • Keep assigned areas of the building neat and clean at all times
  • Understanding of safety protocol associated with various cleaners and chemicals
  • Understanding of the use and need for PPE (Personal Protection Equipment)
  • Understand the usage and location of SDS (system data sheets)  
  • Regularly check to ensure that appropriate exit doors are open and all panic bars are working properly during the hours of building occupancy
  • Sweep and/or vacuum designated classrooms and assigned areas, empty trash cans and dust counters, shelves, window sills, etc.
  • Clean assigned corridors/hallways during the shift, including dusting the tops of lockers when their condition requires it
  • During vacation periods, or days when students and staff are not in the building, work with custodial/maintenance staff on mid-year and/or end -of-year cleaning, maintenance and other assigned tasks
  • Lower U.S. and Washington State flags at the end of each student school day
  • Make such minor maintenance repairs as requested or needed (within capabilities)
  • Report all graffiti, vandalism and/or damage of school property to the building principal, and then try to correct the problem as quickly as possible
  • Remain on assigned school premises during work hours unless directed otherwise by the building administration
  • Keep equipment and tools in good working condition and order needed supplies, tools, equipment and materials as requested from swing and night custodians
  • Keep the custodial rooms clean and orderly
  • Move furniture or equipment as required for various activities and as directed by the building administration
  • Comply with the school district's regulations and the local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash and recyclable materials
  • Regularly communicate with the Director of Maintenance and building administrators for things needing to be done (check mailbox daily for messages)
  • Know the location of and how to operate all emergency shut-off equipment and security systems
  • Treat co-workers, supervisors, students, parents and others with dignity and respect at all times
  • Serve as a positive role model for students, and practices the behaviors that are expected of our students
  • Work in a flexible and cooperative manner
  • Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and talk or hear and sometimes walk and sit.   Occasionally the employee will bend or twist at the neck more than the average person. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 50 lbs.  The employee is directly responsible for safety, well-being, or work output of other people.
 
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.      
 
Work Environment:
The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud.
