EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

• Currently licensed in the state of Indiana as an RN. Subsequently, maintains this licensure and provides Human Resources with any licensure renewals or changes.
• Previous experience in Operating Room/Surgery is required.
• Must possess Basic Life Support certification or obtain prior to providing direct patient care. Maintains BLS certification per hospital policy.
• Maintain, or be willing to obtain within 6 months of employment, ACLS and PALS certification. During this 6 month period, must be working with a certified ACLS and PALS RN.
• Possess a desire and capability for teaching nursing staff, patients, and families.
• Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work in a multi-task environment where interruptions may be frequent. As well as, be able to assess and command emergency situations and readily adapt to change.
• Ability to cooperate with other members of the medical team personnel, patients and/or their families, as well as other departments to give individualized patient care.
• Ability to cross train to the PACU, and function as a recovery room nurse when needed.
• Must be able to cross-train to ambulatory surgery care.
• Within 30 minute radius of Woodlawn Hospital.

PRIMARY DUTIES SUMMARY:

• Coordinates the total nursing care of the patient through the use of the nursing process and provides patient and family or significant other teaching for the preoperative, intraoperative, postoperative, and home care for the ambulatory surgery patient.
• Implements physician’s orders appropriately and accurately. Reports to the physician or appropriate person any pertinent observations and reactions regarding patients and records information accurately in the medical record.
• Identifies patient and verifies surgical site with patient. Additionally, ensures Pre-op Check is complete (H&P present, informed consent signed, test results present, etc.) before patient is taken into surgical suite.
• Responds to patient’s emotional and physical needs in a therapeutic manner.
• Gives patient explanations and verbal reassurances consistently.
• Assist physicians as needed, transcribe and implement physician’s orders appropriately and accurately. In addition to reporting to the physician or appropriate person any pertinent observations and reactions regarding patients and record these accurately in the medical record.
• Preps and assists in draping patients correctly for all procedures.
• Carries out medical and surgical asepsis during all procedures.
• Is consistently ready and prepared for assigned cases and has patient in the surgical suite before the scheduled surgery time.
• Assessment and reassessment of the patient is clearly and concisely communicated in charting.
• Effectively communicates with the physician accounting for all sponges, needles and instruments during and after the procedure and documents in the appropriate area and reports discrepancies to department manager promptly.
• Communicates lab/imaging services report to the surgeon during the procedure.
• Gives report of patient’s intra-operative condition to PACU nurse.
• Follows written procedures for sterilization and chemical disinfection; knows responsibilities and the necessity for chemical and biological monitoring.
• Prepares room in a timely manner with all anticipated instruments, sutures, supplies and equipment for each individual surgical procedure.
• In summary, the Circulator Nurse is able to perform all duties of circulating nurse, including conducting the “Time Out” before each procedure.
