PRIMARY DUTIES:
- The Nurse Extern is responsible for adhering to all standards of nursing care and taking accountability for all patient care given during his/her shift.
- Under the supervision of the primary RN or LPN, the Nurse Extern will assist nursing by performing skills and services to meet personal needs and comfort of an assigned group of patients.
- Can perform ordered nursing interventions as long as a demonstrated competency is on file. Interventions may include, but are not limited to the following tasks:
Vital Signs and Oxygen Saturation checks, intravenous catheter insertion and removal, indwelling urinary catheter insertion, maintenance, care, and removal; straight catheter insertion and removal; obtain voided specimens (including specimens from aspirated foley catheter, perform ECG, phlebotomy, nasal swabs for laboratory testing, bladder scanning, accu checks to determine blood glucose level, apply simple, clean, and sterile dressing changes after RN completes site assessment. Demonstrate knowledge of cardiac monitoring and dysrhythmia recognition. May be assigned to monitor telemetry, and document cardiac rhythm strips. May assist the RN in medication administration after the RN has assessed the patient and performed the five rights of med admin. RN must be present when medication is administered.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School graduate/GED preferred but not required.
- Must possess Basic Life Support certification or obtain prior to providing direct patient care. Maintains BLS certification per hospital policy.
- Recent graduate of a nursing program and awaiting licensure.
OR
- Currently a student in their last semester of a school for healthcare (nursing, physician assistant, etc)
This position will be required to work holidays and weekends as needed.
