This position involves assisting with the operation, maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment and systems on board the R/V Neil Armstrong and R/V Atlantis. The successful candidate will work closely with the Chief Engineer/First Assistant to ensure the smooth functioning of these systems. Additionally, they will assist scientific personnel in using shipboard power and perform routine checks of electrical equipment. Other responsibilities include maintaining science winch displays and power circuits in labs, helping determine electrical requirements, and supervising the adaptation and connection of scientific equipment to shipboard power.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
To be successful in this role, you will need a strong background in electrical systems and experience working on similar vessels. A high school diploma or equivalent education, combined with two years of sea duty as an Engineer or Electrician on a similar vessel, is required. In addition, you must hold a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner's credential endorsed as an Electrician or 3rd Assistant engineer unlimited HP, Motor. Excellent communication skills, familiarity with various engine room and ship's electrical systems, and the ability to discern and help repair equipment malfunctions are essential. You will also need to demonstrate good safety practices and procedures, including the ability to pass a Pre-employment DOT drug screen and hold an Unexpired (STCW Expiration date) USCG medical Certificate.

This position requires you to work at least 8 hours per day, sometimes exceeding 12 hours, 7 days a week. You will need to live and work in cramped quarters, often in bad weather and with violent ship motion. Essential functions include climbing steep and vertical ladders, entering and exiting compartments through hatches, doors, and sills up to two feet high, and participating in emergency drills and launching lifeboats and life rafts. You will also need to perform physical labor, climb, and handle moderate weights and equipment over 50 pounds.
